Just a few quick questions:
1. Is the service grade worth over the field grade? I'm a college student and obviously budget is on my mind. If its worth it to spend the extra 100$ for the service grade? I will do it in a heartbeat if it is worth it because I will be keeping this gun for a long, long time. 2. How are the wait times looking? Is it about 3 months right now, or longer? Just wondering, because my current lease ends the first week of June. Worst case scenario would it take 4 1/2 months to get to me? Just wondering because I have no idea how the current market is affecting them. I will probably list my secondary address because I will probably be moving in June. 3. HRA or Springfield? I would LOVE a WWII era numbered gun, if that effects anything. From what i've read the HRA's are post. 4. Anything else I should know, or request on a sticky when I send in my paperwork? I'm pumped. I've wanted a m1 ever since I shot one when I was 15. Just discovered CMP yesterday. Its like Christmas |

If you put a post-it note on your paperwork requesting a WWII serial number for your first purchase, it may or may not work. It can't hurt to ask, and some folks have stated that it worked for them. You may just get the next box off of the stack.
Winchester and Springfield Armory are WWII vintage. Harrington&Richardson, International Harvester and Springfield Armory are post WWII vintage. Websites like culver's shooting page have break down of serial numbers for approximate date. Post war rifles generally have the most up to date/modern version parts and improvements...Some rifles are a mix of older and newer version parts. Remember that most of these rifles have gone through a rebuild, some of them may have been through multiple rebuilds depending on service. If parts were in spec, they may not get changed out. A good example is the older lock bar type sights, some didn't get swapped out and are sent out on CMP rifles, even though they were supposed to be replaced in the last days of WWII. A Service Grade is worth the extra money. Think of it as getting a better grade barrel. Lots of times, the SG looks almost new. Wood may have some dings and dents, but the overall quality of the metal parts will be nice. The lower graded rifles are good starting points for folks who are going to rebarrel, refinish and install new wood anyways. Why pay more for stuff you are going to change... The cmp website has a forum where questions on shipping times and such are more accurately addressed than here. The time it takes to process the paperwork and ship can vary, so they give you a few months as an estimate. I have received rifles in as little as 30 days from sending in the paperwork, but that is no guarantee on other shipments. Get the SG and do not forget to also buy some M2 ball ammo to go with it. Ammo from the CMP is cheap right now, but that can change as time goes by. |

I'm a college student too and just sent my order in for a service grade h&r. I added a sticky asking for usgi wood but highly doubt ill get it. Over on the cmp forum I was told the odds are 2:1 against me for old wood.
I would say for the 100$ difference, you can't beat the deal. |

and after some cleaning and boiled linseed oil coats, The rifle on the right is my CMP WWII Springer, the stock is a CMP new walnut. http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h246/2T2_Crash/Weapons/57a464284fe1289cdaf6b54bb93fb59c.jpg How well do the new production stocks fit? Did you have to do any fine tuning to make it right? |

Honestly it's a great stock, my front hand guard was chipped and I emailed CMP asking for a replacement... Normally I don't care but when I pay for something new I expect it to be new... The guard was replaced very fast.the stocks are Boyd's I believe. |

i just found out there is a CMP store 90 miles away from me in anniston so i might head over this weekend. Take all your paperwork with you. I am sure someone will be there that will help you pick out the right rifle. Let us know how it works out, and remember to post pictures. |

after talking and doing research it seems as if the south store has very limited stock.
apparently there are only rack grades. Im torn. Should i just send in the paperwork? If i go to the store it will be a 3 hour round trip and gas. I dont know anything about barrel grades or how to 'pick' out my own rifle. At this point im really tempted to fill out all the paperwork and send it in for a service grade. But, at the same time, i'd really like to look myself. I just dont know enough about them and don't want a rack grade if i can help it. Any input? |

i just found out there is a CMP store 90 miles away from me in anniston so i might head over this weekend. That is the best way to do it. I've been to the North Store twice. Nothing like walking around looking at rack after rack fo rifles and picking the one that "fits" you the best. I bought 2 SA's (May 1942 and a Dec. 1944) there and two H&R barreled actions that my youngest son built into rifles. Two words - barrel condition. I chose for barrel condition. Replacing every other part is easy compared to replacing a worn out barrel. edited to add - The best shooting M1 Garand I own/or ever shot was/is a rack grade greek return rifle. The metal ain't pretty on the outside but it had a like new 1953 LMR barrel on it. When people see the groups or the pop ups going down they ask if its a "match" rifle. If you're going to shoot it - choose for barrel condition. |

Did you have to do any fine tuning to make it right? It is completely useless. I can get round 2 MOA with M2 ball from my father's perfect condition Garand, while mine, with what appears to be an unfired barrel, shoots 5'' groups with the same ammo. I'm going to have to spend half the initial cost of the rifle to make it worthy for JCG competition. ![]() |

i just found out there is a CMP store 90 miles away from me in anniston so i might head over this weekend. If you do this, you will have a chance to pick over some of the RG guns too. You may find something that is a diamond in the rough. For my first CMP purchase, I went and combed over the store for awhile, and got some help from Leon. I wound up with an HRA SG, from the 54/55 production timeframe. I JUST mailed off my paperwork yesterday for a FG HRA. I wanted a RG, but I don't know when I will get back to Anniston, and the RGs are not available for mail order - so I paid the extra $50. However, it is about to get a LOT of work done to it, so if it looks a bit rough, so be it. If you don't want to tinker, the SG is worth every penny, and according to most people they are the best deals going. My SG is a SHOOTER, and it looks better than average. -shooter |

I just dont know enough about them and don't want a rack grade if i can help it. Any input? Mail in your order to get in line. They're not stocking the store until they get through the large backorder pile for service grades. Put a sticky note or write right on your order what your looking for and be polite. "Would appreciate a WWII rifle with a good barrel" or "would like a post war rifle with USGI stock if at all possible". If they see one in the crate they're working on they'll likely hook you up. don't get silly and ask for something outlandish like "would like an all original rifle with original stock and barrel" because they would be selling such a critter on the auction site for 5x as much money. good luck OH and if you go and hand pick out a field grade, which is what I was told they had in the racks, you could likely find one with outstanding metal and barrel but with a semi nasty stock. Replace the stock with one of your choice and drive on. A good DGR aftermarket stock is reasonable in price. |

Anniston put out 2 racks today. 22 Springfields and 22 HRAs. They said "there would be no resupply." I met people from Kansas, Illinois and all over. We walked in at 8:05 am. There were were 11 Springfields left and maybe 15 HRAs. Two people were buying 6-7 Garands each. The Service guns sold out in 30 minutes. I got a 1940 Springfield, 200 rounds of Greek, 25 clips, and a strap.
Good luck! Edit: Correction February 1943 |

I mailed my order today for a SA SG. Hope they don't run out before they get to mine. Wish I would have done this 2 months ago. I highly doubt they'll run out anytime soon, will be acouple years till they do that, just may take awhile because of the amount of orders. Saw on the cmp forums where they have 4000 items to process and ship out. Not 4000 m1's, just to clarify. |

I had planned on driving up to the South Store next week to buy an HRA Service Grade Special (RM1HRASSP) but after reading the SS reports on the CMP forum, I decided against the trip (931.6 round trip) and sent in an order via mail.
When I inquired, CMP customer service told me that they have the SGS HRA in stock even though none were seen on the racks lately. I have an SA SGS and have for a long time wanted the HRA to go along with it. With things getting as crazy as they have, I figured no better time than the present before it gets too late and I can't get one. |
| Im going to send my application in on tuesday for an H&R service grade and 3 cases of greek ammo. I was going to ask for a new stock but if they dont fit right I guess ill just ask for a pretty one instead. Hopefully it will look as good as the SA I picked up a few days ago. |

I recommend creating an E Store account and ording the ammo now. Then place your customer number on the order forms for the rifle. I was lucky enough to have a guy on the CMP forums go and pick me out a nice Rack Grade Winchester and 2 Barreled Navy 308 receivers just before Christmas. They shipped the same day and I had them the next day. I currently have a mail in order in for a Service Grade H & R. |

While were on the subject of ammo, I'm confused about which documents they need for buying Greek HXP. The HXP is not listed under Surplus Ammo in the E-Store. I thought it was considered surplus.
I'm not sure if they need just my club membership or the citizenship too. To purchase commercial ammunition the requirement of membership in a CMP affiliated organization/association must be met. To purchase surplus ammunition the requirement of citizenship and membership in a CMP affiliated organization/association must be met.

| I hope to follow your lead soon. I sold my Yugo 59/66 because the market price was just too irresistible and the cash puts me very close to the price of a CMP Service Grade M1 (now how's that for a trade). Just need to add a few $$ more and I'll be ready to take the plunge. Just like you I'll be looking for a WWII serial # SA. Good luck! |

I got my email today (my order mailed on Jan 25th)! And yeah, I just saw the update about no more SA. Hopefully since I got the email, that means my order for a Springfield is still good to go.... Orest has stated if you mailed it on or before Feb 5th, you'll be okay. They put 'sold out' to allow them to catch up on all the orders they have received, and they have enough rifles to cover all the orders they have already received and were expecting to receive on 5th. |
