just an idea, how fun would it be to take a beat to shit shot out garand and re-barrel it to 270 or 6.5 swiss?
keep it aesthetically the same, but have it shoot some different stuff. just a thought. |

mag blocks (for the shorter case) are available. The mag block is a total waste of time and expense. What's the worst thing that could happen? You would load a .30-06 and the bolt would stop .4" short of closing. No ignition or jam. Hopefully, the shooter knows what he/she is doing when they pick up a weapon (this includes what kind of ammo and which end the pointy end should go ). |

I've seen a Garand in .243 and that is a little more challenging than .270 in a Garand due to the shorter cartridge length and smaller bullet diameter.
You lose a little diameter with a .280 Rem or .270 Win conversion but the overall length is basically the same so feeding is not really an issue. Fulton Armory used to sell a .270 Winchester barrel for the Garand, which made it a very straight forward conversion, but as far as I know that's no longer available. Still, it might be worth calling them to see if they still have one on a shelf somewhere. |

Wonder what the effect would be on the "operating rod?" We all read about keeping the cartridges fired to mimic M2 ball ammo. The gas port size and/or position would probably be altered to work with whatever commercial ammo is out there. Could probably do that for .30-06 if you were getting a custom barrel made. |
