Kinda interested in a New Springfield M1A Loaded with SS barrel and synthetic stock.

Is this a good way to go for a new in the box M1A / M-14 type rifle.

I thought I might eventually make it into a DMR type rifle...

Thanks,

I have a loaded in wood and the barrel is parked.  But it's an SS barrel.

It shoots pretty well.  I just posted a bunch of groups in the "why do you own your M1A" thread going on.

It's heavy.  But no heavier than a garand.  In fact it's about the same.  I think I would've liked a lighter version of the M1A though.  Especially if I could be so lucky to get one that shoots well with a skinny barrel.  Either a Scout/Bush or Standard in a synthetic stock.  I bet those would both be a pound lighter than mine or more.

I did buy a synthetic for it, and it's a hair lighter.  But I think if I got a good USGI from Fred's or somewhere, it'd be even lighter.  The Springy's (which is what's on there), have that texturing sprayed on over a USGI synthetic.  Just adds some more weight.  Hehehhe.

JJREA,

Great looking rifle!

That's exactly the set up I was thinking about.

Has it run well for you, did you have any issues with it?

Shoot safe,

It has never malf'd.  Not once.  I have 3 good mags. I 10 rounder and 2 20 rounders.  The 20's are USGI I believe.  I think.  Hmmm..  I forget.  But they seem good.  hehehehe

The only thing I would bad mouth is the springy GenIII mount.  It sits offset the centerline of the bore.  And strangely, it's over the right side.  Plus, it's made from a very soft metal.  I would find a different mount.  I would even venture to say the Bassett is better.  And if you're just using it at the range, it's probably good enough.  But that's only from hearing what others here say about it.  A better mount would be the sadlak or something like that.  Probably even the ARMS is better than the springy.

But yeah, it's a great rifle.  I don't know about all that "in spec, out of spec" stuff.  If my receiver is out of spec, I wouldn't know it.  It doesn't have as many rounds through it as some of my other weapons, but I have not had one problem with it.  I don't shoot it that much any more, as I've been recooping from health problems (lyme disease) but there were a couple of years where it got shoot a good amount.  Not tons, but enough to know it's accurate and I like it.  It does kick more than an AR though.
