I just picked this up on the spur of the moment.  The guy was asking $1000.00 and I have been wanting one for awhile now thought it sounded reasonable.

Anything special I should know about these?

Thats a smoking deal they retail for 1500ish.

The only real negative thing I have heard is that the front sight is too fat for longer range shooting.  But that is about it.

They are LOUD.  Shooting it indoors, or under the roof of a covered range, is just obnoxious.

But they are fun little rifles

Nice!   can you use a regular handguard or is that rail perm attached?

I agree with the loud assessment.  I have a scout and when I shoot it under cover at the range, I always get bad looks from those near me.  Congrats on the price. $1,000 is a smokin deal.  I thought I did great when I bought my scout for $1,100.

No, you can take off the rail and put on a regular handguard.

Nice deal. +1 on serious ear guards. Muzzle brake is up and back which you will notice in rapid fire when the muzzle stays put. Try Hornady TAP ammo - http://www.hornadyle.com/products/more_detail7481.html?id=72&sID=79&pID=1 it perform great in the SOCOM.

It is ok I have a Loaded currently though.  Nice stick feed her well.

the only thing about M14 clones is they are even more addicting than black rifles

Its funny Ive had a DPMS LR-308 for about 3 years and have only shot it once.  Its an OK rifle I guess, nothing special.  But this socom has got me motivated to start gearing up the 650xl for .308.  It must be the platform, there is just something about the M14 and the M1Garands that make them really cool rifles.

Agree! I love the Garand action...added to my M1A/14 addiction is the Mini-14.  Got two old school NIB laminates on the way from a private seller next week.  The Garand/M14/Mini's just have soul imho.

That is a very good price.  I have one but not so thrilled with it. I don't like the muzzle brake.  It is very loud.  Barks like a cannon at the range.  It has a nice picatinny rail "u" bolted to the barrel and sticking through a front stock cutout.   Otherwise, it is pretty much standard Springfield hardware as far as I can tell.
