How do you get the metal endcap off a Garand front handguard?

The liner removes easily enough...but I ain't having much luck removing the metal cap so I can fit it on my new wood.

I really don't want to destroy a perfectly servicable handguard...but I really wasn't wanting to buy new metal either...

Get a small flat tip screwdriver and bend the tabs up at the rear.  Then push the metal sleeve thru

I can get that part out...the other metal part on the front wood is the problem...Mine seems to be glued on/pressed on/grown on the front of the handguard!

I think I'm just going to get some new metal for my front handguard. I just don't see the ferrul or whatever they call it piece coming off without ruining the wood. This front handguard being the best piece of wood on my Garand...I want to not destroy it.

The cap is pressed and crimped on.
It's best not to remove it unless you absolutely have to.

If you do, use a wide, thin blade-like tool to pry it off.  Something like a very wide, very thin screwdriver blade.
Removal will usually do at least some slight damage to the wood since these were never intended to be disassembled.
