Had to replace my Op rod spring on my M1 Garand after it broke.  I picked one up at a gun show and noticed that the new op rod spring is shorter then my original.  Can anyone tell me how long the spring should be?  Did the guy sell me a tanker model?  Any help would be great.  Thanks.

Minimum length of 19.75 inches.  Maximum length of 20.25 inches.  HTH

One of the best springs available is the SS one from Orion 7.  Pretty hard to beat.  Avoid the wolff extra power op rod springs as they're too much.

Did you perhaps get a M1a/M14 spring?  They're shorter IIRC.

If you got it at a gun show it may not be made to USGI spec so the length itself may not tell you how it will work.  I bought a gun show spring once that was so long the op rod wouldn't lock back.  I learned that British WW2 wirecutters are still useful after all.

Thank you guys for your help.  As for the spring measurement comes in a 19.5.  My old spring is still 20 in.  Should I use the old one.  Also one problem I have been having is that my op rod will disconnect from the bolt.  Only happens when i use hot loads.  Any help on how to fix this?

Stop shooting hot loads.

It sounds like you could have easily bent your op rod and possibly done much more serious damage to the weapon. There is an adjustable gas cylinder plug available that can compensate for heavy loads to a point.

Kid goes the doctor and starts to move his right arm back and forth and says "doctor, doctor it hurts when the I move my arm like this" and the doctor says "then stop moving it like that"  LOL.  Yeah after I posted I thought that too.  Thanks guys I will try to replace the op rod also.  Hope it works.  Really love my M1.  Serial number dates from 1943.  What a classic weapon.

Hang on, dont jump to conclusions
Replace spring, properly grease the rifle and take to the range and see how it functions.
Everything may be fine. The rod may not be bent out of spec but the tab could be worn. It can be rebuilt or if bent out of spec it can be bent back

I agree with M1G on not jumping to conclusions, however I would not take it to the range until a careful TI has been performed.
I would be especially diligent about looking for cracks in the bolt and receiver if the op rod is bent or cracked.

Stick with nominal loads.  Replace the spring and see what you get.  If the oprod jumps the track, then replace it.  When that happens, the camming surfaces on the inside of the oprod hump are being damaged.  It's a degenerative situation that will happen more frequently each time.

The camming  surface can also be rebuilt

Seriously. Do not shoot even factory bolt action rounds. Or buy an adjustable gas plug.
