Forgive me if this topic has been covered before. I tried the search engine but it gives me nothing back. I'm contemplating to buy either a SOCOM 16 or a Scout version, aside for the barrel length whats the difference? At one point I would like to use it for hunting too.
Thank you. |

The scout squad I just bought came with a NM front sight and small aperture rear sight - good for accuracy with irons at longer distances... Personally I'll be replacing them with ones like the SOCOM II has which is a tritium front and large aperture rear...
I like the length of the scout better and don't much care for the muzzle accessory limitations that a 16" like the SOCOM has - with the integral gas lock/front sight base/ muzzle brake... The scout squad also came in a fatter wood stock (old NM specs, I believe), and feels much better than the narrow wood and especially the synthetic stocks. I would get the scout and go from there... I just fitted a wood stock onto a SOCOM II with the VLTOR rail sys., and it was interesting but worked out...after the dremel got to come out and play. If you buy knowing you will eventually change this or that you'll be happy with either one so get BOTH!

| Some do not like the "fat" front sight on the SOCOM, since if you are going farther out than say 100-200 yards, you can't see the target, just the front sight. Other than that, I think the difference in the Scout and the SOCOM are very small, except for a few inches of barrel length. I love my SOCOM. |
