I installed a NM rear sight and can't feel the clicks on the windage knob.  Is this normal?

No  you should be able to feel the clicks.   Whiteoak Armory uses two pins that the sight rises and lowers around so that there is not play in the sight rather a cool system.

White Oak is doing M1s and M1As now?

Which NM rear sight do you have? The original or the service windage knob with the chisel slashes that mate with a detent and spring?
M1/M14 rear sights can't be pinned since the sight base has to slide sideways for windage adjustments.

Sight Base has NM/2A stamped on the side.  I figured the other guy was stalking about AR match sights.

He was talking AR sights.

You either didn't get the sight assembled correctly or you need a detent ball and spring (i.e. if the windage knob has notches cut on the face that meets the receiver instead of 4 big lugs).

Iirc, mine didn't have a spring and ball but it did have four lugs the approximate size of my stock windage knob.  In fact, except for finer threads the match windage knob is identical to the stock one.  I will remove it and check again though.

Marty

ETA:  I removed the windage knob and compared it to a stock one.  As I stated earlier, except for finer threads it is identical to a stock one.

The NM2A base is the real NM sight (no slashes cut for detent and spring). Try another ELEVATION knob (assembly). The spring washer is probably crapped out.

Thanks.  Also had a thread going on the M-14 forum.  They helped me figure out the elevation pinion spring was shot plus the teeth on the windage knob were worn.  I replaced the elevation knob assembly with the one from my stock sight and it improved.  It isn't crisp as I think it should be but guys who have been shooting M1s and M1A/M-14s in matches tell me that the NM windage knobs were never crisp.

Thanks again for your help,
Marty

If the elevation knob washer is blown, the sight won't hold elevation regardless of how you much you tighten the windage knob screw.

OP; dig out a field manual for the M1 or M14 (FM 23-5 or FM 23-8).  In the regular maintenance section (I think step 28?) it tells you how to set the rear sight tension.

How did you get I was having an elevation problem when I specifically stated I couldn't feel the windage clicks?

Huh?  I didn't.  Just explaining how the sight is assembled.  You thread the the windage knob into the base (you should be pushing the base forward into the sight cover to do this––it's a pain), then start tightening the screw on the windage knob.  If you're not pressing down on the aperture with your thumb with every detent on the windage knob nut, then you're not doing it correctly.
Make sure both knobs are flush to the receiver.  It usually takes me a couple attempts before I get both knobs flush and engagement on the windage knob nut.

IME windage knobs are always stiff and have a clunky feel.
