I have a SG SA Dane M1 (beautiful rifle) and am extremely satisfied with it, and am now looking to get an M1 for my little brother as a thankyou for watching my toys while I am stationed overseas..

what shape are the HRA rifles in compared to Springfield Armory? I am curious if they are generally in better shape due to the lest likely chance of service in combat vs the SA?

Its a debate between beauty vs possible history of the rifle for my brother.

I have 2 Service Grade M1s: 1 SA and 1 HRA. Both were made in the '50s and they are both in great shape. If you get a SA then you could conceivably get one from any time frame that the Garand was made. If you get a HRA then it will be in the latter portion of when Garands were produced. A benefit to getting a HRA is that they were produced when all of the changes/improvements had been made and they weren't being mass produced during WWII so you get a well finished rifle (not to say any of the others aren't great). If you got a SA from WWII then that would have some great history but I think the odds of getting one in that date range from the CMP at this point are slim (I think they are mostly late production such as the one I got a year ago so they have the same changes/improvements as the HRA ones). I don't think you could go wrong with either though. Any Service Grade is going to be in fine functioning condition and most likely beautiful shape.

Yes.....I know you said it was for your little brother.

So, say it this way.........

IF it was gonna be my first and only............I'd want an SA.

Who knows when the supply of HRAs will dry up.  And, I'll assume that he isn't a collector.  So, what would he care at this point. He'll have an M1 from the real SA (not SAI).

Aloha, Mark

PS.............then.............

IF, he were to get a WW2 ser# rifle..........he'll have fun trying to find parts to make it "correct."  OMG
