Does anyone know how many M1 Garands CMP has on inventory? Such as Service grades Springfields and HRAs? I want to get one but won't have the funds until next fall. I am hoping they still have some in a year from now.

I expect they will. I seem to remember Orest saying that they had a couple years worth of Garands at the rate they were going out. This was 6 months to a year ago. Plus we have a lot of things coming from the CMP taking attention and money away from the Garands. Bayonets and MID accessories for example. Save as much as you can now and be ready if there comes a notice of low stock.

Recent qoute from Orest said 4 more years, but I would get one as soon as you can!
CMP has 200,000 regular customers and sometimes they get into the hoard mode.
I just ordered another Springfield Armory Service Grade, really nice Garands for the money.
Just get one as soon as you can.

Hey glad I found this thread...

I was just looking at the CMP Garands yesterday and wondering if it would be a good buy. I have never owned a Garand before so I know little about them. Can I buy a Field Grade rifle and it be a good purchase? How do they compare to surplus rifles from other places like AIM?

My advice is if you are in Ohio then just drive to the store in Port Clinton and hand pick one. I got a pretty good condition Field Grade that was in better shape than a lot of Service grades.

That question has been asked regularly for at least the last ten years.  They haven't run out yet.  Just how many is left is anybody's guess.  CMP sales seem to run hot and cold depending on the political situation.

They aren't exactly a stones throw away...It's a haul...

Too bad. It was about a two hour trip for me, but well worth it. I guess if you are around Cincy or in the Southeast part of the state then it is probably about  four hours.

If you want an M1 Garand, then get one now!

There not making anymore of them.  The guns you pick
from today are the best quality there's ever going to be.

In the future the quanity and quality will decrease, and the
price will increase as a rising demand chases a dwindling supply.

I recenty bought 3 Garands from CMP that are as close to a NIB rifle
as you're ever going to find anywhere.

And there's the slim, but possible, chance that CMP will be shut down
by the liberal anti-gunners in congress.

All it would take is an incident where a CMP rifle was used in a crime.
And when it's found out that he bought it from the federal government.

It's a very remote but possible event.

That coupled with the decreasing supply tells me the time to buy an M1 is right now.

I was at the CMP south a couple of weeks ago, lots of guns, some bayo's and flash hiders but he rifles were looking rough. I went through everything in the store, some of it several times. I finally found a nice WRA for my buddy that was with me (the reason we went) and of course found a SA I just had to have.
But the service grade are looking rough, and the correct grade looked to have been re parked, does anyone know if they are re parking the rifles prior to sale?
If you want one and can make the trip, do it! if you order through the mail it is the luck of the draw.
same thing with the bayo's, you have to pick one out for your self. I got a cherry PAL with the brown handles, awesome bayo!

If you are going to pick one out at the store yourself, you may be able to get a good field grade.      If you are going to order by mail, I would suggest getting a Service grade.     Either will be cheaper than buying from AIM

I'm pretty sure all they do at the CMP is test fire them and if they don't function then they fix them so they will. They were probably reparked in Greece shortly before being stored however many years ago. My service grade SA looks like it was reparked and then immediately coated in cosmoline and stored (probably not the case but it looks pretty new).

To the OP, I'd recommend a Service Grade. If you can get to the store and hand pick a nice rack grade then go for it but both times I've been to the North store (about a year ago and a year before that so it could be different now) the Rack Grades looked a lot rougher than the Service Grades so I got a Service Grade both times (HRA and SA) and couldn't be happier with either of them.

Get a CMP Service Grade HRA or SA, and don't look back!

Think of it in terms of how much you want to shoot it.  If you can hand pick it, you can get a nice field grade and control the details of the pick.  (I hand picked a FG, it looks like it saw action  The Service grades sucked when I was there, so I got the best WWII FG I could find and other than the mismatched wood/fix in hand guard, the metal was a SG or better.)

Think of it this way if by mail...
If you want to shoot it...
A lot... Special Grade (1K, all new/redone)
A bit... Service Grade (or else you will be replacing parts along the way)
A little, just to have one FG (it will work and be an M1)
Weekend club stick... Rack Grade (I don't believe you can get these right now anyway)

What you really need to do is buy ammo.  M2 ball's world surplus is drying up again.  Order SPAM cans for long term storage (these are highly limited right now and are unlikely to be available again in the future) and the rest to shoot.

In general, get as much M2 ball as you can while it is available and cheap.  Or whatever you get, it will just be a weekend club stick.

IMO it's well worth an 8 hour drive to the store and hand pick your own. You may run across a FG that has SG metal and bore but a dingy stock but don't count on it. I was in there last year and saw a few that met that criteria, but I ended up with a SG H&R that looks practically new.
Thanks Dad.

In Washington State, hard to hand pick.

Consider yourself lucky... if you can't drive there often, it saves you LOTS of money.

Boy I hate to rub it in. 45 minute drive for me. I stop in every couple of weeks, along my gun shop / pawn shop "circle". For me it's just one more gun store...

You are right. Me and my 24hr round trip hate you.

Sometime next year on one of my vacations I will get a room for a night and make a two day jaunt. I need a good late Springfield to go opposite my 4.29 RRAD rebuild.

I really enjoyed my only time at the South Store a couple of years ago, even though I only ended up with a Winny receiver and ammo.

All right all right....so I don't live THAT far away. I could drive there and back in a day, it won't kill me.....I don't think. Guess I'll be making the trip in the new year, you twisted my arm

Even though I can't hand pick, I have gotten 3 awesome service grade carbines and 2 awesome service grade garands, via mail in!
I have another service grade springer garand on order.

About 45 min for me, too, but I go to the other store.

LOTS of temptation on those places. I don't go often for that reason alone.

It's worth the trip, just to see it once.

While you're there, go over to the 600 and 1000 yard ranges. There's a lot of history at Perry. If you can make it in late July or early August, you can catch some of the National Matches. The sound of all those rifles shooting at once is outstanding.

See the part in red above.  It is good advice.
