I just bought a M14/M1a and have a few questions.
First, what is the proper name for a semi auto M14/M1A that is not a Springfield?
As I understand it the M14 has full auto capability and the M1A is a Springfield product.
What do I call my rifle that was built on an armscorp receiver and USGI parts?
Second, the windage dial on the sight does not have positive clicks, it feels mushy. Can this be corrected?
Thanks in advance

What name , what is it called on the receiver ?

On the sight , I would clean and lube it first , before I started changing parts .  Also , make sure all the correct parts are present and put together properly .

God bless

Armscorp of America / Armscorp USA / James River Manufacturing receivers were marked as either M14, M14 NM, or M21 (to make legal in New Jersey).

Call it what you want, it's your rifle.  Some M14 fans give feminine names to their rifles.  Whatever floats your boat, IMO.  My guess is the BATFE would refer to it as a commercial semi-automatic M14.

M1A is the model name for the commercial M14 made by Springfield Armory, Inc.  SA, Inc. made a few select fire M1As but most are semi-automatic fire only.

As stated the M1A name is designated by SA for their M14 clone it is identical to the M14 except no select fire, most others like Fulton Armory, SEI etc.... are built on their receivers and are designated M14 Clones again semi auto only and they use USGI parts and are hand assembled and cost substantially more but from what I understand the quality is much higher, I have had my Springer for about 2 years and have had zero issues
I would think that if you could find a true M14 it would cost $$$ not to mention the cost just to get a select fire weapon

I like to classify all semi auto M14 type rifles as "M14 Type" rifles. HTH

No matter the brand it's still an M14.
It just won't shoot automatic.

Many "real" M14's in military service were blocked to prevent automatic fire.
What did we call them?

We called them M14s!

Common terms; SAi = M1a

everything else pretty much = M14

M21 is a model distinction, associated with a host of accuracy mods for the purpose of sniper rifle.

LRB's M25 is a modern design modification where the scope mount is integral with the receiver.

MK 14 mod 0-1, and also the M39 EMR is a M14 in a sage stock.

***Like many words in the English language have more than one meaning some of these designations might be referring to something else, but these are common....

I call mine " that gun over there" or "the other one" or "the one next to it" unless its in the rack then its "the fourth one form the left", when on the range its "that damn loud one".
