For those of you running a scout mount on your rifles, how hot does the mount and optic get?

seems to me strapping a steel ring around a 7.62 barrel and then attaching either fragile optics or electronics to the steel band would make for a short life expectancy

I know personally I have gotten my rifle hot enough that I had to wear nomex and leather gloves to hold on to the fore end and that was just at an Appleseed
Although having steam curl out from the upper hand guard is cool as hell

Also, wouldn't mounting a scout mount ruin barrel harmonics? altering accuracy?

nothing?

Unless you're a long-range target shooter with purpose-built gun, barrel harmonics are a moot issue. These are combat rifles and the barrel has a major contact point with the gas system vs a small piece of metal between the gas system and the receiver.

I prefer and use Ultimak scout mounts because they're built and designed extremely. In replacing the upper guard they are a larger heat sink than the SA scout mount. I've never had any issues with them.

I bought a scout and used the standard mount it came with.  It got REALLY hot fairly fast.  switched over to an Ultimak and could not be happier.  Doesn't heat up nearly as fast and feels just as solid.  I think it added a bit of weight though but I can't really tell.  I'm running an Aimpoint T1.

I put an Ameaga Ranges mount on my M1 Garand.  Its great.  If I was scoping my M1A today I'd buy a scout scope mount for it as well.

I removed that  scope mount attached to the barrel and also replaced the
handguard to cover the hole.

I then mounted my scope the traditionl way and I haven't looked back.

I used to want a scout mount.  It seems like a good idea, but there's definitely another side to the story.  See http://www.chuckhawks.com/scout_scopes.htm .

"The greater the eye relief, the narrower the field of view of the scope, other factors being equal."

If you are using a weapon that has to be loaded from the top (like a Garand), your optics mounting options are limited and it makes sense.
