Hello,
The bolt on my dad's M1 garand will lock back without a problem, but will only release forward when the safety is on. On my M1 I can release the bolt with the safety on or off. I have tried to compare the mechanisms of the two but haven't found a difference. Any ideas on what is causing this? Thanks in advance! |

The Garand safety when applied cams the hammer down that is why it is easier with the safety applied since the hammer normally rides on the bottom of bolt. Try putting some grease on the riding surface of hammer and bottom of bolt..
If that doesn't make it better try a different stock with tight trigger group lock-up. |

I actually ran straight to my gun safe to try and feel the difference on my M1. I didn't really notice any difference in drag when the safety was engaged. Truth is, I use a lot of grease on my M1... |

I'm holding the M1 for my dad right now while he tries to sell his house. I went and greased the heck out of the bottom of the bolt and the surface of the hammer. Unfortunately it did not help. The bolt still wont budge from the locked position if the safety is off. Besides trying a different stock, any other ideas? BTW, he was having extraction and ejection issues so I went and replaced a bunch of parts. I'll have to ask him if he ran into this before I "tinkered" with it. I should have checked that before hand, but I didn't. Could I have screwed something up when I did that? It seems to work OK otherwise when function checking (haven't fired it again yet). Thanks. |

I don't have it in front of me right now, so I am not sure of the manufacturer... I think it has a CAI stamp on the receiver. I suspect it was an import.
I ordered parts from Orion 7 and replaced the op rod spring, ejector assembly, extractor, extractor spring/plunger, hammer spring, clip ejector, and clip latch spring. I am sure some of the parts were originally OK, but I figured replacing them with probably better quality was a good move. Maybe I was wrong. Milo5- What is a "riddle of steel" post? I am not sure if it is welded, but the receiver looked similar overall to my SA receiver. |
