Does CMP charge your credit card when you order or when they ship? I am off to airborne school next month and would love to have an M1 Garand waiting at my FFL when i get home but i need another paycheck or two before I can justify buying one. Could I order now and have the money in my account when they ship in 45 days or whatever?

My credit card wasn't charged until it was ready to ship. It was about 30 days from CMP receiving order and then shipping.

They charge a couple days before it ships.

You can never be sure how long it takes. My Garand took about 3 weeks from the time I snail mailed by paper work in. Then CMP got swamped with all the ammo orders, they are working on orders from the first week or so of March right now.  My Store order from 3/11 is still processing, with no CC charge yet.

Realistically, it will probably be at least 4-6 weeks from the time they receive your order to the time they charge your CC.

one more quick question. As an NRA member and an Army Reservist, I qualify to purchase right?

NRA membership doesn't help a bit (it's not an affiliated club). I believe your reservist status is sufficient, though. Just to be sure, here are the eligibility requirements: http://www.thecmp.org/eligibility.htm

CMP ships directly to your door, no FFL needed.  They perform the NICS check using all the notarized documents you have to submit and have a statutory exemption from the FFL requirement.

Are you having it shipped to an FFL becuase you will be gone to airborne ? IIRC CMP will hold the rifle if you tell them you will be out of town when it is expected to ship.

ETA : Maybe the FFL requirement  is specific to your state amd not the CMP ?

From the CMP site : "First- we are not your regular gun dealer. The law that established the CMP exempted us from FFL requirements. we are not required to keep a 'book' or to ship only to another FFL. The law also specifies that we must have a completed 'successful' background check conducted for each sale. So - we cannot ship a rifle until we get a 'proceed' from the FBI. The three days after a 'delay' does not apply to us as it does to FFL licensed dealers. We can also ship direct to your home, where dealers cannot."

WOW!
so how do they ship? ups? fedex?
I can only assume they require a signature upon delivery, correct?
And I'll just get an email before they ship so if I am still at Benning then I can tell them to hold it for another week or so?
How fast is shipping? it has to be overnight right?

ETA: what is the customer ID on the first page of the order form?

You should take a look through the CMP forum:

http://www.thecmp.org/forums/index.php

There's a lot of good information including ordering information and some interesting threads that discuss shipping times for the various Garands that CMP carries as well as ammo shipping times. There are also some good threads on the condition of rifles that people have been receiving lately.

To give you an idea on order times, I sent my paperwork via USPS priority on 3/19 for a Service Grade Springfield M1 and I received my email confirmation from CMP on 3/31 saying that they received my order and basically reads like this:

We have received and verified your recent order.  There is nothing that we will be able to tell you about the order until we have input all orders received ahead of yours into the system. Your order will now advance to our sales area and from there to our shipping area.  Please note, that unless otherwise listed, our order to ship time is  60-90 days.  You will receive other emails as the order progresses.

I'm still waiting for my order to show up on the eStore website and haven't received any more updates from them as of this morning.

Anyways, I hope this information helps and good luck with your purchase.

If you have ordered from CMP before you are assigned a customer ID. Having it helps them identify you from someone with similar name, it is not required and you will not have one if this is your first order.

Rifles were shipped FedEx express overnight, with adult signature required last year when I got my last M1. Ammo was shipped FedEx Ground.  As suggested, read the ODCMP forum there is lots of info on actual shipping times.

Just FYI, I mailed my docs on 3.2.10. On 3.20.10, I received an email stating that they received my order on 3.5.10. On 4.2.10 my order hit the e-store, and my card was charged. as of 4.9.10, I do not have a shipping confirmation and the e-store still lists it as processing. I expect it to ship next week I hope.
