Can you load an M1 Garand manually without an en bloc clip?  Like loading it one round at a time?

I'm trying to decide if I want an M1 Garand or an M1903 Springfield.  I really want an M1 Garand but the only thing I never liked about it was that you need a clip for it.  I know in wartime this was really a non issue as they were given en blocs all the time but they probably are a little hard to come by now.

You can get a one round "SLED" from Fulton Armory, but you might find one cheaper elsewhere.

They are available, for a price. When I first got my Garand I was lucky (and smart) enough to police up the clips left behind at the high power clinic (I had permission). Now they go for anywhere from $1.25 to $3.00 each.

You CAN modify an en bloc clip to accept one or two rounds. This was regularly done by HP shooters because a course of fire would be 10 rounds... and the Garand clip held 8 rounds.

You can but shouldn't. The clip in place slows the bolt's velocity and allows it to fully close before the floating firing pin hits the primer. Out of battery discharges can occur if a clip is not in place. Now I know thousand's of guy's are going to say they have been doing it for years and have never had a problem. Me I use a single round clip.

They aren't really that hard to get, plus, if you plan on buying any surplus ammo from CMP, chances are it will be available in spam cans already on en blochs.
