I am having serious trouble inserting  twenty round magazines in my rifle I've tried both I have and I can't get the magazine in period. I know at least one of them worked before I field stripped the rifle. Now I can't get either to work and I'm almost 99 percent positive I have my trigger group back in properly. Because I lined the groove in the trigger group with the groove on the inside of the rifle goes right in and the trigger group latches down. sounds like everything is working properly when I dry fire. The mags are unloaded when I attempt to load them, should I try to put a few rounds in them? Both of the mags are a grey looking finish with no marking at all. The one that came with the rifle was in it when I bought it so it fit at one time. It has me stumped and yes I've double and triple checked I'm putting in the mag properly. I feel like a fool this is the first rifle that has ever stumped me like this before. When I tilt the mag in the front and try to get the cut out square into what looks to be the latch it will not go all the way up. I forced one in there and had to yank with force it back out. Thanks for all your suggestions I'm new to the M1A and my dad hasn't touched one since 64 he laughed and said I can try and help ya but haven't had a chance to make it to his house yet.

Sounds like maybe the recoil/mainspring guide isn't latched properly............did you change stocks on your rifle?

Sounds like something isn't seated properly. I agree, maybe the operating rod spring guide? I just bought this pre ban 1987, mags were really tight going in and out at first, they do tthat I hear, but I cleaned them with rem oil, and rubbed them down with gun grease, including the lug on the edge, then did the same in the magazine well with an acid brush, rubbing it into the corners, wiping them down with soft cloth till they shined. Checked for any burs and bends, now works fine. But if you did a tear down, something didn't go in right. Why did you field strip the rifle? SA and the Army manual says specifically to do this as little as possible and only if absolutely needed. Call SA, they're more than helpful.
According to the Army Tech manual TM 9-1005-223-12;
Bent or deformed magazine;
Excessive dirt in reciever or on magazine;
Deformed or damaged operating rod spring guide;
Deformed or damaged magazine latch;
Magazine latch movement restricted;

Heres my rifle I just picked up;

I have to give my magazines quite a slap on the baseplate to get them to lock in.

"Rock" the magazine into the magwell front first, then "slap" it firmly on the baseplate.

Should lock right in.

The tolerances are VERY tight on these, so yes, it can be tricky.

ETA: Being "almost 99 percent positive" you have your trigger group installed correctly isn't good enough.  You need to be 100% positive.

Did you change anything?  new op rod spring guide?  new spring? add a rubber recoil buffer?

I'm not sure it's even possible but is your op rod spring guide installed upside down?

Know that part about being 99 percent right well uh well I was a 100 percent wrong field stripped the rifle reassembled and guess what mags go in. This is my first M1A I've got alot to learn about them but I'm learning. Also thanks to Different's M14 mag guide I figured out one of my mags is a BRW S-1 and other is unmarked so I'm thinking early CMI or the other unmarked USGI maker since it has all the welds where described in his guide.

I have bogus "W" Mags that were actually made by CMI. They seem to have been reparked after the the W was stamped in and were extremely tight inserting into my rifle. I also have a stock that is tight on my mags as well.

ETA...I see you figured it out

RWC57, my mags still go in tight as hell but they go. I don't know if that is the way it supposed to be or what. I know a friend who lives in another city I'm going to try to get to his place when I am employed again and get his two cents on the matter. Until then I'm too darn broke to really shoot the M1A I do have 160 rounds of Portuguese 7.62x51 I'm ready to run through it. My mags are unloaded everytime I put them in also which may be some of the deal I don't know. All my friends are into tacticool weapons and crap so their no help, I asked one what he was going to buy for his first pistol he said FN five seven I lost all hope for him.
