Kind of curious as to which M1A I should be looking at.  I've finally convinced myself to purchase a rifle so expensive.... I figure it can fill multiple roles.

I'd like something that I can throw a foregrip on and a reflex sight,  or a red dot sight for 300-400 yards or something that I can reach out to 800 yards with.  This is really an all around SHTF type rifle.

Which style of m1a would be most fit for this level of flexibility?

If you're looking for a specific Springfield Armory, Inc. product, the M1A model MA9827 is a good fit.  This is the loaded standard model with stainless medium weight barrel, synthetic stock and Vltor Weapons extended cluster rail.  If you're looking for a build project, I suggest a semi-auto commercial M14 with a medium weight barrel and a Sage International M14 EBR stock.  IOW, a clone similar to the Army's M14 EBR-RI.  The 18 " and 18.5 " barrels will hit targets at 800 yards.  I'm not an optics guru but the 22 " barrel will give you the muzzle velocity that rifle scope BDCs are set up for in the .308 Winchester cartridge.  If I'm hosed up on that point, someone correct me.

My personal preference is to avoid bipods and vertical fore grips, the M14A1 configuration excepted.  But I realize bipods and fore grips are personal and there's room under the tent for all of us M14 fans.

Not really looking to build anything.  Just trying to figure out which is the best for my intended use... kind of jack of all trades gun.

Consider a Springfield Scout in a M14ALCS/CV... something like this...

Yep, that about covers it.
Adjustable lop, cheek pieces to adjust for height with optics, no bedding needed with the Sage, no gas system unitization with the due to shim use, excellent rail space, manueverability in tight places with the Scout length barrel, DC Vortex/GLFS setup which is very solid and there for suppressor use, and a nice lower power Leupold for a wider amount of shots from close to far.

Of course there isn't really much practicality to 800 yard shots unless your sniping which isn't something that a person will likely be doing if the shit hits the fan. Defensive shots is what are and battlesight zero range is basically the most practical. A good Aimpoint covers that or a person solid with irons. As always, add more onto a rifle and the weight goes up and the balance changed. I still tend to prefer the simplicity of a Scout in a usgi fiberglass with a DC Vortex/hooded GLFS setup.
Of course I did sell mine though, deciding I didn't need more than my tuned Fullsize. It's the same setup, just a little longer which makes it less manueverable indoors.

Your an evil man...thought I'd tell you that.  I've been resisting the urge to buy a sage since I got my scout, now that I've found a new standard M1A that I must have, your pictures of your Mod1's make me lust after a sage.  So, my scout will sit in a Mod 1 stock someday.  Unless I can find one of those really really cool USMC brown sage stocks.  Thanks....

Sorry for the brief hijack.

OP, get the scout, I have one, its awesome and a good shooter!

I just bought the base model from my friend,I'm happy.
Got it yesterday with 8 generic mags and 3 GI mags.
I paid $1000 bucks.
Seems they are kind of  like the trim levels on new cars.
Get what your wallet can afford.

BINGO ! that is what you look for . Good work Select Fire ! Get yourself a good solid Standard M1A .....LEARN to shoot it ,it's ways ,it's sights ....800-1500 rds later you will know for sure if you are ready to move up ?

IF you've got everything out of your M1A ..........dont get a new barrel , but a good turn bolt gun if it is ultimate accurracy you are after ?

Most rifles will outshoot their owners 2-1 at least ,

I've seen them around for as low as $1400 or less used.  My only issue with the socom is the gas system.  With it being shorter than the standard size, it's harder to suppress, and cheap ammo "can" short stroke.

I ran a case of Barnaul silver bear through my scout, that same ammo wouldn't cycle my friends socom.  Not a big deal, but the suppressor issue killed it for me.

I'm waiting for my stamp for my can now...
