so i have been looking at a cmp m1 garand and i am going to pull the trigger.  I already belong to a clulb so that is taken care of, my question is the throat erosion and the bore number gauge?   example the field grade muzzle will be greater than a 3 but the service grade will be less than a 3.  in shooting them what will be the difference. i am looking at a field grade vs. a service grade.   i don't mind working on the guns and fixing them up but i just need a little help. thanks

for 99% of M1 shooters, the TE doenst matter. If you are shooting under 200yds, any TE under 5 will work fine for standard accuracy from an old rifle with surplus ball ammo.  MW, is the number you want low.  Most M1 MW is caused by steel cleaning rods. If you have access to someone who can remove the barrel and shorten it 1/8" , your MW will go back down around 1.

If you're within driving distance, you can go to one of the CMP's 2 stores & actually pick out the rifle you want.  The guys at the South Store were very helpful, they even loaned me their throat & muzzle gauges & showed me how to use them.  If you go this route, go ahead & send in your paperwork now so they can get you qualified to purchase, otherwise the wait at the store can get a little long.

IMHO......between the FG and SG........just spend the money for a SG.

If this is your first Garand and you want a rifle that you wont have to do any work on go for the Service Grade

Just so you know with a Field Grade you may have beat up wood and high muzzle wear. For a few more bucks you will get a rifle that will have alot of barrel life left in it.
If you are just going to play around at the range now and then a Field grade "might " be OK for you.
If you want something more I still recommend the Service Grade

Go for a Service Grade.

Muzzle is far more important than TE when it comes to accuracy. SG is atleast graded better for muzzle wear.
