I picked this beauty up yesterday at the gunshow at Jamil Temple in Columbia. It has an HRA marked safety, not sure about the rest of the trigger group. Serial number indicates year of manufacture 1998 (thanks again, Different).
How much, if any, of this gun is USGI?

I paid $1290 OTD for the gun and gear.

By the number 7790186 - 66118 on the bolt

66118 was OM/Winchester's cage code.

Hammers, op-rods, bolts. bbls, trigger housings all were marked with the cage codes.

very nice looking rifle!!! And a great price too.... CONGRATS!!!

You may want to take off the handguard, my all USGI WIN M1A has the WIN barrel stamp 90 degrees off so its hid under the handguard.... I knew it was chrome lined and USGI but didnt know the manufacturer until I got it home.

Is the chamber chromed?

Damn. Nice rifle at a good price. Now do yourself a favor and throw away the 3rd gen. mount.

And replace with what?  Just curious, as I'm in the same boat...

Thanks!

Don't usually use optics on my M1As anyway.

What makes this a bad mount?

I guess the biggest thing that I didn't like about it was that it put the scope waaaay above the bore. Of course you could still use the irons, but If I were doing it again, I would use a lower mount like the Sadlak or ARMS.   JMHO, YMMV, and all that.

Nice score.

If it was made in 1998 it might very well have a Vietnam era barrel. I think, don't quote me, that they ran out of the vintage barrels around 2000 and started putting new ones on.

Nice score either way dude. You got a quality rifle.

My 1999-vintage M1A has a 1963 TRW barrel.

Looks like a medium weight commercial barrel. I think Springfield used 6 groove Douglas barrels. Is the gas cylinger unitized with the stock band - ie a national match mod? Is the trigger pull crisp? You may have a loaded version.

they are alloy and they get peened and loosen up from the recoil.
