I'm at the Garand Collectors Associatons Meeting at Anniston, and as you guys asked, I got some new info about ammo.
1. CMP is in the process of negotiating for more 30-06 from Greece. I was told that that the Greeks want for money for it, so it will cost more. 2. CMP is in the process of negotiating with Hornaday to create RANGE ammo for M1 Garands. Not as good as the match ammo, but still good ammo. 3. CMP is in the process of negotiating with Hornaday to make more match ammo. It will be expensive. I'll give a full report of the weekend later. Just got out of the car after the 5 hour drive back, so if my sentence structure isn't the best, please bear with me. At 9 AM, 200 folks unwrapped 18,000 Garands which were Greek returns. We worked till 4 o'clock. The rifles came stacked on pallets with paper in between layers of 10 rifles or so. I would guess that there were about 10 layers of rifles per pallet. People worked in groups of 6-8. We were to clear the rifle, inspect/field strip it if we desired, and then record the serial number and place the rifles in other boxes of about 48 or so. If we wanted to buy a rifle, we were to take it to an armorer to have it headspaced and graded. My group unpacked 500 or so rifles. We were NOT allowed to buy the following: Win-13's IHC's 3 or 4 digits M1C's M1D's Full prices were paid, no discounts, and all rifles were shipped home. NO ONE WAS ALLOWED TO CHANGE PARTS ON ANY RIFLES. I was in a group of 7 very nice guys, and we wrote down what each other was looking for. 3 of the guys in my group were looking for their first Garands and basically wanted good shooters. There were plenty of those to be found. There were many very nice 5.6 and 5.8 SA's with nice stocks and very good barrel readings. About 20% of the rifles were HRA's with most being in the 5 million range. Of those, my group found maybe 10 or 15 that had LMR barrels, but many of the late HRA's will make people very happy when they get them. About 200 brand new unfired rifles were found, still in the VCI paper. Those were available for $3500. My friend that I went with found a Type 2 National Match that was complete except for the front sight. It was $2500 and he passed. Many of the rifles had the very dark black Greek park on them. In my group, 4 of us were interested in WWII rifles. There were some of those, but many were in the black park of the Greeks, or beat up. No one in my group, or the groups around me found any WRA barrels, and in speaking with other guys, I have heard of 3 that were found. We found no cartouched stocks except for post war DAS. I heard that a JLG stock with very light stamp was found, and of one very beat up WRA/GHD stock was found. I heard of 3 IHC rifles that were found. CMP had maybe 7-8 armorers working at one time to grade/price rifles. In my groups experience, they graded VERY conservatively, and several of group and the groups around me returned rifles to boxes that they felt were overgraded. Now the info as to what I bought- 4.7 HRA, some barrel wear, what looked like all correct parts, service grade. 1,30x,xxx WRA, 1942 SA barrel with light pitting, poor stock, no other WRA parts, field grade. (When I asked why it was a field grade with a pitted barrel, the armorer said it would "probably" shoot out.) 2 Mil SA, lockbar sights, post war parts on the rest of it, trashed stock and barrel, rack grade. I did not attend the banquet last night, and I did not hear Orest speak first hand, so I will not report what I "heard" was said. Let me relax and I'll post about what the armorers told us during the tour on Friday. |

Just wondering.
So we loaned them all these thousands of rifles for free, and now they want to charge us extra for some more obsolete ammo they have, after we paid for 60 million rounds? Sorry for the bitching, but I never was afraid to shoot a couple clips thru the M1 because ammo was reasonable. I finally shot my M1A today, just 20rnds, for the first time in over a year, due to the price of ammo. Looks like the M1 situation is gonna be similar to the situation the M1A/FAL/HK91 owners are in. |

Be damn glad the Greeks are willing to sell the ammo to CMP. They could have sold it to any number of Importers which would be selling it to the public at a higher price than CMP is charging. |

Unfortunately that looks like the way things are going. Time to break out the Model 52. At $30.00 a brick still reasonable to shoot.
On a side note, I went to a gun show today and saw someone selling the Greek CMP ammo for $145.00 a can. In all honesty I have to say that just pisses me off a bit since I never thought it the intention of the program was for shooters to buy up CMP ammo and rape other shooters at scalpers prices for it. On the other hand maybe my morality is a detrament to making money. Sorry for the rant. |

Thanks for the ammo report. Any other good, or bad, news from the convention? Is there any ammo available at the South Store? How's Orest ? thanks again |
