Just picked up a mostly correct H&R and I see in the area of the barrel where the date of manufacture is there is the silver metal rub.  It looks like its been rubbed for quite some time and is smooth.  I apply grease to the spot and see a little grease bild up on the rod...problem, anythign I can do about it other than spend money on a new op rod?

Note: Thing put 5 shots near touching at 50yds during its debut shoot.

Op rods do not normally come into contact with the barrel on the side.  I would look at the tab that rides in the groove in the receiver rail and see if it's worn on one side. Is the op rod bent just forward of the handle?  Jim Swartz is The Man when it comes to op rod repair.

Actually, this is not an unheard of issue on a Garand. Lightly polish the op rod where it makes contact with the barrel and it will be fine.

What do you recommend to use for the task? Fine file?

What about the op-rod rubbing on the stock?

If the rifle is grouping and functioning fine, I wouldn't worry about it.
I put a tiny dab of Tetra gun grease on the operating rod saddle of all my M1 rifles.
