I have a coworker that has an M1A.   We were shooting recently and he just loved shooting the CompM4 on my AR.  He wants one now for his M1A.  I'm not a big M1A guy so could I get some recommendations on mounting a red dot sight on his M1A?  Just wanna be able to steer him in the right direction.

I'm thinking of recommending the CompML3 for him but he might think that's a little too high.

I had a comp M2 on my M1A standard. It was mounted in a ultimak rail mount and was rock solid. I tried it in standard mounts and it sit to high. Ive got it listed in the old EE if you want to see what one looks like.

I used to use an M-68 on my M-14 back in OIF 4-7.  I had the option of using the KAC Rail System, but found that it complicated disassembly for routine maintenance.  I did try using the ARMS #18 mount, but found that it also complicated disassembly, so ended up using the issue SEI scope mount and a BHI Cheek Piece to get the proper eye alignment.  Scope sat a little high, but was still a practical set up in the MOUT environment

I'm getting away from using red dots as primary optics on M14s.

I've transitioned to 1.5-5x20mm on the MK14, 3.5-10x40mm with a Micro T-1
on the side for the M21A5 and NM iron sights on my traditional configuration.

ARMS #18 Mount with a Aimpoint Micro.  This is the lowest possible receiver mount /red dot combo, you don't need a cheek rest with this set up.  You can use the Aimpoint factory mount that it comes with to attach it to the ARMS mount, or get a LaRue quick detach low mount for the Aimpioint which i have on my rifle.

The Burris Fastfire (and other similar micro red dots) would sit lower, but I wouldn't use one on a tactical rifle...they are just not built for the potential abuse like a tactical rifle class.
I have one though and they are great for target shooting:

Heres my CompML3.. in an Arms mount

Sits a bit high, but a normal cheek pad works.
