Hopefully this is a simple fix but for the life of me I can NOT get the bolt back in this thing after cleaning. I disassembled the weapon for cleaning and it went pretty well until I got to the bolt. It was a little tough to get out and took a bit of wiggling, I didn't force it but it didn't come out so easily. Now I am at the point of reassembly but I can't get the bolt back into this thing. The problem seems to be that I can't get the bolt past the part of the receiver that connects the left and right sides, behind the mag well, just above where the trigger group hooks in. There is a notch in that portion of the receiver that looks like the firing pin is supposed to slide through if you rotate the bolt about 10 degrees counterclockwise but I just can not get my bolt past that point. Is there a simple trick for this, am I missing something here? Obviously it has to go in some way because it was in there before and I removed it but I am just not seeing how it is done.
And FWIW, it's an '04 SA M1A NM. It was new before firing this weekend, this is the first time I have taken it apart (been in my safe for 5+ years now!). |

It isn't hard, it just takes practice.
Bolt roller down, bolt lug up, place bolt against left side wall at a 45 degree angle with the apex of the slope facing the muzzle and start wiggling and twisting at same time. You will feel the back of the bolt clear the firing pin bridge, when it does twist the bolt slightly and allow it to align and drop into the lug cut-out on left side recelver wall. You got the operating rod OFF of a Spring Inc. rifle, so with practice you will be getting that bolt in and out no problem. Welcome to ARFCOM. |

It was the 45 degrees to the left wall of the receiver bit that helped! I had been looking at the notch in the firing pin bridge trying to feed the bolt through that, when I just put the bolt in at the 45 degree angle and didn't worry about the notch I was able to wiggle it in. I've torn down many weapons in my day and this was one of the trickier bolts I've had to manipulate. Thanks for the welcome, I have an AR and M1 and have been a lurker for quite a while. There is a great wealth of knowledge here and I appreciate the help on this! |
