I don't have an M1 yet, but someone recently gave me 30 rounds of ammo.  The one on the left appears to be a hollow point.  What's the one on the right?

looks like some kind of sabot round, maybe a 7mm or 6mm bullet?

what would be the advantages? longer barrel life, higher velocity/ BC??

The left looks like Winchester Supreme, the right a Reminginton Accelerator. The Accelerator is a .22 cal bullet in a sabot. It's not the ammo for a garand.

Yes, the one on the left is marked "Winchester30-06 SPRG."  The one on the right is marked "R-P 30-06 SPRG."  What's it used for?

looks like its just for plinking

the accuracy would probably be shit since the bullet actually never hits the grooves jmo

guessing the back falls off when it exits the barrel

The Remington Accelerator was a 55gr PSP coming out of the average bolt gun barrel at about 4000fps.  The sabots would leave residue in bores and require more frequent deep cleaning than a normal jacketed round.
