| So I am new to the M1A experience, having only owned one for about 5 months. After purchasing my new rifle (a standard) I took it to the range and was fairly disappointed with my performance. I made another trip, same experience. I had been shooting several different loads, LC M118, some 147 grain stuff, all giving me about a 4 inch spread at 100 yards. So here I am regretting my purchase (or at least less than excited about it) when I decide to try some pricier stuff and I go out and buy some Gold Medal Match 168 grain at $35 a box. Holy crap is this a different experience. All shots grouping at about an inch in windy weather, cloverleaf groups, oh my. This is what I am talking about, I feel like a young boy who just found boobs. So....my question. Are these rounds really that good? Can I recreate this performance reloading my own? And if so, do I need to use the match brass, or can I get reasonably close using any brass? |
| Yes, you can do that with handloads. You will have to experiment with different loads to see which your rifle prefers. Oh shucky darn, that means more RANGE TIME! Great excuse to shoot. Match brass is more consistent in weight and dimensions but you'll do great with regular brass. Have fun! |

Quoted: do some online research for loads, and try some 168 and/or 175 Seirra matchkings, Too, try 168 AMAX; and, 168 Nosler's were recently recommended. ( I've yet to try the Noslers. ) Some of my M1A's prefer AMAX, and others SMK's. Oh, and the efforts spent ascertaining which likes what combination of bullet and powder equates to time very well spent. |
