A family friend has a Garand that he's wanting to sell me.  He's let me borrow the gun and try it out before purchasing it.  Neither of us know what a fair price should be.  He bought the gun 15 years or so at a gun store. The gun's finish looks to be original and the surface wear is about what you'd expect from a gun this age.  The stock looks good, shows a good number of dings and wear marks, but no cracks.  There are no cartoches (sp?) visible.

I have the following details/serial numbers:

Receiver: Springfield Armory 15003XX
Barrel: Marked Blue Sky/Arlington VA at the end near the front sight.  The following numbers are marked under the operating rod:  SA D6535448  1053 A204
Op Rod: Marked NM
Bolt Assembly: D28287-125A     S-06

Does anyone have a fair value that this gun is worth?  I believe it was most likely released as a CMP gun at some point, probably 15-20 years ago?

Thanks.

Any idea what it would be worth today?  What is the story with the Korean imports?  Loaned to Korea and purchased back by a US importer?

pretty much yes...worth today?...3-400 tops IF the barrel is decent...depends on what it gauges out at ...most of them I saw back in the 80's were shot out and had poor non milspec replacement parts.....save your money...buy a CMP Service grade.....

Update:

I took the rifle by my local gun store yesterday and had the smith take a look at it.  He said that the barrel is in pretty good shape (some wear but not shot out), and that it has a National Match operating rod on it.

He said he thought a fair value for the gun as a shooter would be $500.  He noted that it was a blue sky reimport and that they aren't nearly as collectable as the CMP guns or others that don't have the import stamp.

I feel like this is a decent gun, and I'd like to make sure that I'm paying  a fair price for it.  I don't want to pay to much, but I don't want to rip off a family friend either.

its your money...take your chances...myself...I would pass, since he didnt give you the throat and bore erosion numbers by gauge saying that the barrel isnt shot out is questionable...and a NM op rod means dick on that particular rifle, could be that the op rod was replaced after the orig was bent, either way its not a 500.00 gun..at least not by a lot of peoples standards...buy a CMP service grade and start out right, if the "family friend" wants to unload it for 400.00 it "might" be worth a chance....otherwise pays your money and enjoy....

Blue Sky Garands are imports from Korea and Blue Sky was the company that imported them. The Garands in question were surplussed in country. Importers then purchased them ( well used) marked them as imports and brought them here. Condition ranged from good to shot out and the vast majority of them were not in good condition. Right now, a CMP Service Grade Garand will cost $617.95 delivered to your door. It is not difficult to purchase though the CMP, just about any one can meet the requirements. The Service Grade Garands they sell are in good to very good condition and the majority will score very good. The Service Grades make very good shooters if that is what you are looking for. As far as what the Blue Sky Garand is worth with out being able see it and look it over is kind of  like assigning  value to a used car or anything else sight unseen. You might try seeking another Gunsmiths opinion and see if he can tell you what the TE ( Throat erosion) and ME (Muzzle erosion) gauges.
