What is the screw on the front of the mount for? Do I need it? It is contacting the handgaurd .

It's a set screw for the front contact point of the mount. Yes you want to keep it. Without it you loose a contact point. MIne hits my handgaurd as well.

When I first got my mount I didn't know what it was either.
