| Just for paper, 100-300yds. 300+ when I can. Was thinking about a 3-9x40, but would I sell the m1a short by not going with more magnification? |

Sir, I've used a few different scopes over the years including a Unertl 32x64mm and currently Kowa TSN-821 27XLER X 82mm. In my experience the ability to see .30cal shot holes inside the aiming black at 300yd is only occasional depending on ambient lighting conditions. Often at 200yd it is also difficult to see shot holes in the aiming black especially if the target is in the shade. Additionally, at distances beyond 300yd almost any ambient mirage will distort an image sufficient to blur the shot holes. In my humble opinion your choice of optics would be wholly inadequate likely for distances of 100yd and greater. HTH, 7zero1. |
| I agree with JJREA, it depends on the use of your rifle. Match shooters (the bench rest types) like as much magnification as they can get, but then again I've never seen an M1A bench shooting. I have a 4.5-14 Leupold VX-III on mine. I hunt and target shoot for accuracy with it, so it does what I want it to do. I'm happy. |
