There's a Springfield M1A preban listed in my local paper today.
Springfield M1A 308, extra mags, scope mount, less than 100 rounds fired
No more details than that. Can someone give me a crash course in preban M1A values? This will (obviously) be my first. I'm in CT, so preban is important. Thanks! |

In Montana, a preban isn't worth more than a regular rifle. On the other hand, I have seen guys in New York state pay $1700+ for a nice preban.
ETA: Of course, with the current frenzy taking place, I have also seen buyers in free states paying $1700 for a plain-vanilla M1A. |

Just for comparison sake...what would you expect to pay on the other end of this ad in Montana? I've never purchased (or paid attention to) M1As at all, so I'm not even sure what a standard rifle would sell for. |

two years ago I bought Springfield Armory No. 18,4XX for $899 off the used rack at Capitol Sports & Western Wear in Helena, MT. It has a mix of USGI and cast commercial SA parts. I think I got a screaming deal on it.
If the rifle has USGI parts, it's worth more. If it's all commercial SA, it's worth less. You can't find a M1A for sale right now because people think they will be banned. I would pay $1300-$1400 for a rifle like you described in MT and not feel like I was getting burned. I would pay $1500 and feel OK about it. If I paid more than $1,800, I would feel like I was getting used badly. |

USGI parts are always added value.... right now in this climate, and you needing a preban for state law.... if you have the $$, you had better pick it up. Having said that I would inquire about the parts content... see if it has any USGI parts and what they are. Good luck, |
