Was just watching this show on Military Channel. They were covering the Ohio class, and showed a sub being having nukes lowered into the silo. Standing guard was a sailor with M-14 with bayonet attached. Is this normal in a high security op like loading nukes? Or was he just trrying to be billy badass?

I was a crewmember on the USS Nathan Hale SSBN 623.  When we loaded missiles from the submarine tender, each missile was surrounded by six of our missile technicians as it was lowered into the missile tube.  Three of the MTs were armed with M14 rifles and the other three held Remington 870 12 gauge shotguns.  None of them had bayonets fixed but they all had their "game face" on.  That was in the mid-1980s.  FWIW

With the possible exception of loading torps, I can't think of anything more hazardous and requiring high security than loading missiles.

I would think the security procedures SOP might have been augmented in the last few years.  Those in the know need not post details.

My Brother in Law was second in command of the USS Ohio back in the late 80's early 90's. He used to tell me that when loading missiles, not only were there armed guards, but the entire surrounding area was being watched by more than armed guards.

Now days Marines guard the Subs when loading missiles.

20 years of USN service.....I've been in a couple of war zones, been to a few other places that were not so nice, I have had to do riot control and I even escorted nuke missiles once.....I can honestly say I've never seen anyone issued a bayonet or have had a bayonet issued to me, let alone seen one mounted on a weapon (in the USN) in all those years.

Not to say it doesn't happen.

You should see some of the amazing bayonets people have found in the process of DCing ships.  A buddy of mine once got a crate full of cut-down Garand bayonets.  Perfect condition.  They were sent to ships, but clearly not always issued to the sailors.
