I built a bolt gun that will do 1\2 moa groups all day but the dang thing is heavy.  I was wondering what kind of groups you were getting out of your socom's I was looking for something a little lighter than my bolt gun so I could carry it.  So what groups can be expected?

I've got 2 SOCOM's, 1 NIB and the other I've only fired at 200 yards at a steel gong the size of a wheel and had no trouble hitting.  My suggestion would be to look at the original SOCOM rather than the SOCOM II.  SOCOM II is very front heavy due to rails.  SOCOM balances much better.  Handle both before making your decision.  I don't know what kind of group it shoots but at 200 yards, it is definitely minute of man.

Did the original Socom have issues?  I recall reading something about some improvements Springfield made thus creating the Socom II.

Understand though, no m1a's are exactly "light"
A socom may not be as heavy as your bolt gun, but alot of folks dress them up like ar's with the rails, and gadgets. If thats your plan, your not far off from a scoped bolt gun wieght wise.

Stick w/ the orignal SOCOM.  The rail on the II makes it really heavy.  My SOCOM runs great.

My SOCOM 16 shoots 1.5" groups at 125 yards off of a sleeping bag. It functions great and after 300 rounds I have never had any problems. It is well balanced. I also just bought a new DSA FAL 16" carbine and it too shoots great and the balance is almost the same as my SOCOM 16

A friend of mine has a SOCOM 16 that produces 2 inch groups with South African milsurp @ 100 yrds using iron sights.
