So I just picked up an IBM that is in ok shape.  The action and all the metal is great and the finish is excellent.  The stock is not so hot.  I have never handled a Carbine, so quick question.  The action/barrel moves around a lot in the stock, and the handguard moves as well.  Is there any way to tighten this up, or is this normal?  It shouldn't affect zero or function, but I don't want the thing to shake like crazy.

The receiver floating around in the stock will absolutely effect your zero. Get a stock the fits better.

Sort of a strange set-up on the M1 carbines.

I had issues with my early Inland made guns stock fit.

The steel hook part thats screwed to the back of the stock inletting can be adjusted up or down to tension the stock to the action.

Also some early carbines had this stock part in a different style(the metal part the rear of the receiver hooks into). The early and late style parts are not interchangable.

My carbine had the wrong piece in the stock and made my fit too tight! I got the proper part for my early receiver and adjusted the screw for a better fit.

As near as I could learn, the M1 carbine action should hook into the back of the inletting, and require just a bit of tension to squeeze the action and stock together to install the front band.

Went to a friend's gun store to see if I could tighten it up.  He said it was rebuilt by South Korea at some point and that they used some parts that they made themselves.  So he opened up the M1 Carbine parts box and replaced the recoil plate and tightened up the trigger housing/receiver fit.  It's a lot more stable now.  I still have a new birch stock coming in anyway, though.  Also, he gave me a GI recoil reducer, heh.
