Well the Fedex guy got here at 11:30 this morning with my Correct Grade SA Serial 5845XXX. The metal is around 95% but the wood is beat to hell. It wasn't what I was expecting. Very large gouges and cuts. There is a square about 1/4" X 1/4" that has been dug out of the wood. Looks like crap. For 950.00 the wood should have been better.

It took me 4 hours to completely disassemble and clean the 3 pounds of comosline off the rifle. Comsoline was even inside the stock storage holes. The bore appears perfect, sharp groves and shiney.

Do you think its a waste of time if I email CMP and tell them how disappointed I am about the stock?

I didn't take pics before the strip and clean, but I will take a few after shots tomorrow. Just have to figure out how to post them. How does one clean up the stock without sanding? The wood is Very dark Walnut.

I have heard of many stories of the CMP always making good on anything wrong.  It is worth a shot, I've had nothing but good things to say about them in the years and money I've spent with them.

I am interested in hearing what comes of this if you call the CMP because I am awaiting a correct grade SA and hoping I don't run into something like this.

Please keep us updated and hook it up with some pics

I hand picked a SA Correct Grade at the Easter Games back in May of this year.  With 30 or so lying on the table to view, I said to myself that there's no way I would ever go the mail order route for this grade.  All had great looking metal, but their wood ranged from "next-to-new" to "beat-to-hell".  Of course I picked out one that was purdy!

Why do you think they need to make it right? Read the Correct Grade description, its sounds like thats what you got. They may offer to change it but should they? No not if its in the limits of the description. I have looked at many, many correct grades at the North Store and some were like new others had very rough wood, just as the grade description explains. Sounds like you got one at the bottom of the description but still within limits

You can try and contact the CMP and get them to do something about it, but like M1G stated it sounds like your rifle matches the posted description of a Correct Grade Rifle.

Correct Grade Rifles are similar to the Service Grade (above), but will show less wear and use. Correct Grade rifles will have all correct parts for the date of manufacture with 80% or better overall original metal finish. The stock and handguards will be of walnut and correct for the rifle but will have some dings, dents, scratches and marring of the wood finish. Stocks will have the appropriate original inspector's cartouche. The rifle bore will be very good with no significant defects and with a throat erosion of less than 4 and a muzzle wear of 2 or less. Very good to excellent condition. Limited quantities are occasionally available. Prices start at $950.

I agree with this.  You can contact the CMP, and they'll more than likely try to accommodate you, but they are under no obligation to do so.  Pics would be beneficial.  My correct SA was not hand picked at the store, and it is beautiful, wood and all.  Just a few minor nicks here and there.

I'll post some pics tomorrow and you will see the condition of the stock is far worse than how they describe a correct grade

This.

They will exchange it and try to find you something better. You will not be put at the bottom of the waiting list either. Contact them.

Don't send the rifle back, just get one of their new CMP stocks for it, or ask them to send you one in exchange for the old stock.

I would contact CMP before I did anything to the stock. I think they realize that buyers are taking a risk purchasing rifles sight-unseen, especially with the high dollar rifles. I have dealt with them on numerous occasions and as long as they feel you are being forthright and honest they will usually do whatever it takes to make their customers happy.

Being in the condition you have described, it is possible that your rifle needs to returned and graded down a notch. Give them a call and see what they say.

Yep you send the rifle back and you may get better wood but more wear on the metal

I am very happy with the metal. Maybe I am expecting too much when I am paying 950.00 for a 5.85 mil rifle.

How much you spent has absolutly no bearing on the subject. "If" the rifle falls within the description .
I realize you are happy with the metal, my point was if you send the whole rifle back for exchange you may get better wood but worse metal finish.
Like I said before I have personally inspected many Correct Grades at the NorthStore and the wood was pretty beat up. Would I buy them? No. Do they fall in the Correct Grade descrpition? Yes

CMP customer service will always bend over backwards to help. Contact them I'm sure they will take care of you .
Thats the problem when you look at other peoples pics of rifles. You get a expectation of what yours will be and when it doesnt look as good you are dissapointed. No one posts picks of their rifles that meet the bottom of the description only the best ones.
I have two Correct Grades that look new, so If I ordered a rfile that had beat up wood I would be dissapointed. Would I send it back even knowing that CMP would exchange it? No because I know the Corrects can vary that much and its luck of the draw
Good luck and hope you get everything straightened out
