I really want one of these rifles and I was just wondering how they are and are they worth the price?

You won't hear from any dissatisfied Socom owners.  For a 16" barreled .308 rifle, they're known for being very accurate, super reliable, and very maneuverable.  The muzzle brake is one of the best designed.  If what you want is a short M1A that handles very well, the Socoms fit the bill very well.

I personally chose the Scout model on many others' recommendations.  I too was enamored with the Socom, but the extra 2" on the Scout put the ballistics closer to regular .308 figures, not far removed from .30-06 ballistics - this appealed to me.   Plus, I was building a USN Mk14 clone, which all use 18" barrels.

ETA: If you really want one, GET IT!!  They're super awesome, so don't let prices scare you away.  I've seen all kinds of outrageous prices out there though, so shop wisely and don't spend more than $1600 for one.

I have a SOCOM II I bought this summer.  Bought the SOCOM II since it was in stock, and the price for a regular SOCOM was only a little less to order (the SOCOM II stock was dinged by some gun-store commando, so it was at a lower price)>

The SOCOM II is a heavy pig.  I tried to like the rails, but quickly lost them and have been running the SOCOM with a regular hand-guard and wood stock.  I like this set-up so far.  Have only put several hundred round thru it, but have not had any issues.  The muzzle break does work and helps to tame recoil.  About the only bad thing I can mention is the W-I-D-E front sight.  It took some getting use to, but I'm getting better with it.

I also have a M1A Scout I purchased several years ago.  If I were to only have one M1A, it'd be the Scout.  Good all around set-up.

My Socom II looks a whole lot like the one pictured on the right.  Fantastic rifle.

Mine is best.

I have 2 of the SOCOM 16 rifles and they are just as others have described. The recoil is soft and when ever anyone fires it they always comment on teh recoil. ( Thought it would kick more)  I recently fired on on Full Auto from a local cop. It was incredibly controlable. The other 308 I have fired years ago was teh H&K G3 which in my opinion is a great anti aircraft gun. First shot on target then watch for airliners and small planes to fall out of teh sky.

I like the SOCOm Springfields a lot and would not trade mine for any other 308.

Not to hijack the thread but where did you get that stock? I "temporarily inherited" a SOCOM II from my brother and the first thing I did was pull those rails and replace the unit with a Fulton fiberglass guard. Next step will be replacing that godawful "urban camo" or (whateverthehell it's called) stock so I'm not embarrassed to take it to the range.

The wood stock on the SOCOM came off the Scout next to it.  The fiberglass stock on the Scout came from Freds.
