What are the advantages and disadvantages of an 18" barrel over a longer barrel? Thanks in advance

Advantages:

Faster, easier handling, shorter OAL for urban, vehicles etc.... my 18" barreled rifle is more accurate than my standard 22"ers. It just feels right.

Disadvantages:

I only have one 18"barreled M1A!!!....... so far.

It probably wont have the same long range capabilities w/o being placed in an expensive chassis stock system.?..

If you compare iron sights to iron sights the 22 in barrel would have a longer sight radius making it easier to shoot accurately.

Ok, without an exspensive stock, will an 18" barreled M1A be accurate out to 300 yards? I will never need it for anything further than that but, I would be happy if I could get 1"-2" groups with match ammo up to that range. Also, is it capable of sub-moa at 100 yards?

The 18.0" barrel is my all-around favorite. I'll assume that you will be using iron sights and
recommend a neutered GI flash suppressor or SEI's GLFS-D-18. Both can use a NM front sight.
The Springfield Scout barrel is very accurate and SEI has 18.0" upgrade barrels available.

Probably not without an expensive stock and a few additional mods.
