Ok I am leaning towards a Bushnell Legend 5x15 40, mil recticle. It will be a range gun, but it needs to be clear and capable of hitting deer size targets out to 500 yards. It is going on a SA M1A NM. I will be using a Bassett mount. I only want to spend about $200. I know that is not alot for a good optic, but I am on a budget.

Thanks

I had a Leupold 3x9 on a NM M1A for a long time. I didn't use the scope enough to justify keeping it on the mount. I put it on a bolt action and it's been there ever since.
I put a Simmons 4x12 Pro 50 on the scope mount and use it vary rarely.
If I were going to hunt with my NM M1A scoped, I wouldn't be afraid to use that rig to 500 meters.
I shoot the metal rams at 500 meters every once in a while with that set up and it has worked good.
That Bushnell and Bassett mount would probably be a good rig.

If you don't need to find targets fast up close, Bushnell 3200 Elite 10x. Like my 4200 6.5-24, but if I was doing it over again for my 308...

I've used Leupold VX-1 3-9x40 (with bullet drop compensator), and a Bushnell Elite 3200 10x40 (fixed power) with a mil-dot reticle. I used both on Garands (don't have an M1A; but the two rifles are pretty close ballistically). I like the Leupold; but found that I was using the scope at 9 power all the time, so I started looking around at fixed power scopes. I read outstanding reviews of the Bushnell, so I got one. I prefer mil-dot reticles over regular cross-hair reticles anyway. It's worked out great for me. The Bushnell Elite 3200 10x40 is actually recommended by Barrett Rifles for their .50BMG! The cheapest place I found it was Cheaper Than Dirt, for right at $180. Most places have it for right around that price--normally around $187.

Hope it helps.
