I live in a state that allows flash suppressors on rifles.  I wanted to make that clear right away.

Here is my question.  Can the muzzle brake on an M1A Scout easily be replaced by a conventional M1A flash suppressor ?  I would really like to buy a M1A Scout, but I hate the muzzle brake.

Thank you for your replies.

Yes.

I happen to have the correct neutered, National Match reamed USGI flash hider with the correct
National Match front sight that Springfield installed on my Scout when it was in their custom shop.
It is all that remains of my SAI Scout Squad.

Let me know if you are interested.

I was just wondering if it could be done.  I am no where near close to purchasing it.

How difficult is it to swap the muzzle brake for the flash suppressor ?  Will I need to take it to a gunsmith ?

Thank you for the assisstance you have already rendered.

It's not that difficult, but you may need castle nut pliers.
Back off the tiny set screw that locks the castle nut, loosen the castle nut.
Unscrew the castle nut as you pull the brake off of the barrel
Slip the flash suppressor onto the barrel, fit the castle nut into place and
reverse the process.

Good luck

Dito what H2O said. It's not hard, I would recomend getting the pliers, there 15 bucks or something like that from Brownells.

One more word of advise on the FHs. I replaced my MB w/ a FH w/o a bayo lug. If you have a bayo lug then you must remove the FH to get the gas plug out to clean the piston and cylinder.

I also live in a "free state" and hate the "neautered" look on the FH, but I also like easy maintainence.

Just my $.02, ($1.00 counting a drop of gas)

I swapped the brake for a USGI neutered FH on my scout....it was a pain in the ass, but I did it.

You'll DEFINATELY need a set of castle nut pliers.

This is my old scout with a neutered NM reamed USGI flash suppressor. It worked very well
