The local gun store has a used M1A Standard with a scope mount for $1,299. The story is: someone from the gun store bought it, drilled and added the scope mount, shot 20-40 rounds out of it, and then sold it back to finance buying a motorcycle. The bore looks like a mirror, there are only a few grains of gunpowder in it, everything else looks like it has never been touched. I have wanted to buy an M1A for a while, a National Match or something of that caliber more than anything, but the price has been causing me to hesitate. If this rifle can be easily modified to make it more accurate or if the deal is good enough I'll probably just go ahead and buy this one.

My questions are:

Is this a good buy for $1,299? (My thoughts are yes, but I wanted to get someone else's opinion)
Do you think I should offer less? If so, how much? (remember the previous owner got an employee discount, amount unknown)
What kind of accuracy should I expect with standard over the counter ammo? (say WWB) Match Ammo or Handloads?
How hard or expensive would it be to have this rifle modified to be more accurate? To be on par with a National Match?

Thanks for your help.

The previous owner shouldn't have drilled anything on it. If he did, don't touch it.

What he said. There are two holes that are made for attaching a mount. Nothing else need be done to make that work.

that is not a great price for a used M1A especially if he had the receiver drilled and taped.....for no reason.  I would leave it be, and keep looking for what you want.

Drilled it or is there just a tapped hole in the side?

If he actually tapped it elsewhere, walk.

That price is higher than what a new SA standard can be had for at my local gun shops.

Apparently the first guy I talked to was mistaken when he said the former owner had drilled the holes myself. I went back and talked to the owner of the gun store the next day and looked at the rifle more closely with him and the receiver had never been drilled. I ended up buying the rifle for $1,300, considering that the former owner had only shot 20-40 rounds out of it to break the barrel in and added a scope mount I didn't think it was a bad deal.

I do have a question though. All of the rifles that I have ever added a bipod to either had rails on the bottom or a swivelling stud for the sling which I attached the bipod to. This M1A has the standard synthetic stock and nothing that I can tell that can be used to attach a bipod to (I've got a Rock bipod). What do I need to do in order to attach a bipod to the rifle?

You can just add a sling stud to the front or SA will modify the one that is on there, i chose to do it myself by removing the old one and getting the rail from Fultion Armory then add a YHM Adapter
