I have a Springfield M1A which was confirmed to have been sold 2/88 as a NM barreled receiver. I have owned it for about 5 years and have shot it very little. Less than 100 rounds. My question: I had the chamber and muzzle measured. The muzzle wear is less than 1 but the throat errosion is 5. What would cause that? Dirty weapon? Dirty Ammo? Seems like an odd wear pattern to me but that is why I am asking your oppinion. Thanks for the help. TC |

Hi: It seems that about 95% plus of all muzzle wear is due to poor/improper/excessive cleaning methods(multi section steal cleaning rod, no bore guide etc). That could explain the low figure for that measurement as apparently the cleaning has be done properly/using proper tools and tecnique. The throat measurement indicated quite a few rounds down the tube, IF correct. There are more than a few throat errosion guages out there and some of them were not made to the correct/milspec dimentions. The pertanant question is, how does it shoot? With a throat reading that high I would expect it to be producing less that "match grade" groupings. Shoot it from a STABLE(ie bench with bags) position with a known match grade ammo( Either Fed Gold Match for Black hills Match) and see how it shoots. That will be the FINAL word on the status of the barrel. Just my 2 cents worth... |

Throat wear is not always bad when it amounts to accuracy. It just shows what barrel chamber life is showing. Just as Glock10mm, accuracy is going to be the final judgement as to whether it needs a new barrel. It is is accurate and shoots well, you're not going to wear it out in your lifetime at 100 rds per 5 years. As per what caused the "uneven wear", the rifle belonged to a match shooter who puts lots of rounds down range and knew how to properly clean his rifles. |

Thank you for the input! It makes really good sense. I have a 1984 Springfield receiver with a chrome lined TRW barrel that is less than 1 for both MW and TE. I wonder if that one would be more accurate? Only one way to find out......... good ammo, Smith Mount and a Leupold!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks again. TC |
