Looking to add a M1 to my list, I have been looking at CMP's correct grade but have since stumbled across Garandguy.com

any suggestions, looking for a reliable, decent looking shooter.

Thanks guys

For just a shooter a CMP Field grade or Service grade will be fine.  The higher grades would be nice but if there is nothing wrong with the rifle if the parts don't all match from the same time period (unless you are starting a collection!).

For a shooter, I'd definitely go with Service grade over the Field grade.

Tony(the Garand guy) is a good guy to deal with and he will sell you a great rifle, however if you get the correct grade from the CMP it will have more collector value because it will be "as issued" and will be documented as such.  It will also be a good shooter.   If that doesn't matter at all to you and you want the newer looking and probaly(out of the box) better shooting one from Tony I am sure you will be happy with it too.

Either way as long as you buy a Garand, you can't go wrong.

The Garand guy builds the closest thing you can get to a new Garand without paying several thousand dollars.

His best grade rifle uses a USGI reciever that is selected for being like new. The barrel and stock are new and all the other parts are new out of the wrap USGI.

Three of the guys I shoot with in Garand matches own these rifles. They are second to none.

His best rifle is comparable to the CMP "correct grade excellent" which is $1400.

His rifle is just over $1200.

I know the CMP rifle is a better deal in some ways but for a shooter with a new barrel, new wood and all new GI parts the Garand Guy's rifle is a good deal.

It is a damn good deal compared to SA Inc's junk they sell for $1300.

CMP Field or Service Grade, IMO.

If that's not good enough, you can always send it to www.dgrguns.com for one of their Package Deals or Mini Package Deals.  With the Package Deal, you get a new barrel, a new stock and refinished metal, and more.  The Mini Package Deal is the same thing, less the new barrel.

A Service Grade, plus the Mini Package Deal, would be about $1,200 IIRC.  About $1,500 with the complete package deal.

I considered it, but the only think I don't like about my Springfield Armory Service grade is the condition of the wood.  I just got myself a CMP stock set and an extra set of stock metal.  If I'm not satisfied with how it shoots, I may still send it to Dean, though . . .

CMP's Correct Grades are just over $900.00. They are all original USGI parts with little or no amount of wear. I have two and they look new.  They don't get much better than this

Start with a Field Grade from the CMP and see how you like it, then work your way up from there. After a while, you will want to get a matching barrel (if for a collection) or a nice Danish VAR barrel (if a shooter), maybe get a nice stock set and then probably have the rifle reparked to specs and maybe even swap parts with ones matching the receiver.

My 43 Greek FG had a 53 dated barrel and other than the bolt and the trigger guard, everything else was SA. You might be lucky and find a nice jewel. Main reason why I strongly advice for you to make the trip to the CMP North Store and handpick your rifle; it's a long trip, but is worth it. Trust me.

Damn you M1G!  I printed out the CMP Universal Order Form during lunch and started filling it out.  (I didn't make a copy of my first package, because I was "sure" I would only buy one Garand .

Did you hand pick your beautiful Correct Grade?  Or did you order by mail?  It's kinda tough to justify flying to Camp Perry or Anniston to hand pick one, as much as I'd like to . . .
