My dad has a commercial SPringfield M1A and has a springfield scope mount and it fits like ass.. The slot doesn't even line up with the slot in the reciever where the large bolt threads in.. Is this normal for the springfield mounts or is my dads reciever out of spec?

Will a better mount fit right on or should I have my dad contact SA directly?

Some receivers are out of spec at the optics mounting cuts and some aren't. There's no way to know without it being measured.
Either way one of the best options is to get a top quality Sadlak mount and go with their custom fitting if needed. Once it's fitted to the receiver you'll have that mount for the life of the rifle most likely which is a long time.

The SA mounts are a weakpoint with there 2 point mounting anyways and aluminum make. You'll be much happier loosing it I'd think.

Here's a linky for the Smith Enterprises M1A-M14 scope mount.

I had a 2nd gen. Springfireld mount, which was a pos.  I put this one on about four years ago,

and it's still working like a champ.

Conventional wisdom would say you should get either a Sadlak or SEI mount.

I happen to embrace the unconventional

I suggest the SAGE EBR stock with a LaRue scope mount reversed

OR the ultimate M14 optics platform - the TROY M14 MCS.

YOu could always try an ARMS #18 too.

I chose to buy a Sadlak Mount and it sit's on a SAI Rec, I used the pin kit that comes with the mount to check the slot, I found my slot cut slightly deeper but it did not present a install problem.
The mount is top notch, I chose not to get the SA 3rd Gen mount once I found out a mallet was used to form it to the reciever and it sat pretty high and was prone to comeing loose.

This is my Sadlak Mount

Another +1 for Sadlack's mount, have your dad look at 1 online then order. His mount woe's will disappear and for a nominal fee if the reciever is out of spec they will machine the mount to correct the problem.

All my rifles have ARMS #18 mounts.
They're lighter & sit lower than any other mount made.
Most anything is better than cheap aluminum.

I might get flamed for asking this, but......

Is it worth even considering cutting out the ARMS so it's middle is open, like they used to offer?

I think it's worth it.

Spoke to Ron at SEI this morning and he told me it was a weak mounting system and would not recommend it. Comments?

I assume it may be weak for sand box use, but possibly just fine for the range.

Then his answer was spot-on for my desired use of my upcoming build. I specifically stated that I wanted it to be durable, so I reckon I'll be letting him install an SEI when he gets my baby.

Thanks!

I just ordered the ARMS #18. Could you post pics of your split rail version? What are the advantages of it? Thanks.
