I would like to remove the handguard off my STD M1A, I see the clip but ot does not seem to want to come off and I don't want to break it

You will bend it before you break the  retaining clip. There is a special armorer's tool made for removing the handguard retaining clip. If you don't have it, use an awl in one of the holes to spread it out of the barrel groove.
