The M1 Garand is 46.6 inches long. There were approximately 4.04 million of them made. Laid end to end it would produce a line of rifles 2971.3 miles long. That's wide enough to stretch from Washington DC to San Francisco and then back to Reno, NV. Add the 10" M1 bayonet, and it becomes 3608 miles. That's right about the distance from Washington DC to London. Add the 16" M1905 bayonet and it becomes 3991.5 miles. That will take you from Miami, FL to Jeneau, AK. Just your random useless info. |
| It is amazing what industrialization accomplished during the war and even nowadays. The numbers are staggering of certain things. Like how many french fries you think are made in one year? Or how many chickens do we kill every year? I don't know why but I think about these things. |
The gentleman here who posts all the old Army and Springfield Armory letters, memoranda, photos, and other items relating to adoption and early production of the M1 Rifle. Some is pretty arcane, but most of it is quite interesting, IMO |
