I just picked up my first M1 Garand and I have no clue as to what it is.

It has the following on the back of the receiver;
U.S. RIFLE
CAL. .30M1
SPRINGFIELD
ARMORY
385***

All parts are marked with numbers and SA on them with S-A-10-41 on the barrel.

It also has the following markings on top of the barrel above the gas tube;

BNP .30 2.494"
18 TONS RER SQR "

What looks like a proof mark;
X X
H B
"ORDANANCE EMBLEM"

And a "T" on the gas tube in front of the front band.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you, Phessor

The BNP and 18 TONS is an indication that it was a Lend Lease rifle shipped to the Brits early in the war. They always proof mark the barrels of their rifles that way. It sounds like you have a nice early production Springfield.

You might jot down the numbers and what parts they are on and post at Amback Garand Forum, they may be able to tell you more about how correct the parts are for this rifle.
