New to Garands.  I've got one that has a hole in the triggerguard near the latch rather than the bent metal of the others.  It is marked SA on the bottom.  What is the significance of the hole?  Is it simply an early production design that was later simplified?

you got it.  the ones with the hole were milled (the hole is for a winter trigger/ND machine)  Toward the end of the war and all through later production they were stamped as opposed to milled.  Starting around SN 3m for SA, some of the VERY late Win-13 rifles, and all HRA and IHC production should have stamped guards.
