I have a regular Garand with the standard sights,but...I shot a Natinal Match and I really like the sights on that rifle.

So,is it as easy as buying a set of NM sights and installing them,or is there some sort of machining involved or anything other than just installing them ?

should be a drop in fit.

It's not exactly a "drop-in" fit.

Assuming you buy a NIB NM base, aperture, pinion, and windage knob.

The aperture must be fitted to the base, usually by stoning the sides of the aperture rail until minimal clearance is obtained.  It is not hard to do, just a tedious try-and-fit until right procedure.

Keep in mind that the tighter the tolerance, the less the mechanism will tolerate dirt and dust.  Also, the small NM aperture, while fine for the range, is ill-suited to the real world, especially in dim light.

TC,

raf is right.... most definitely NOT drop in.

Fitting the aperture track to the sight base can be done by hand easily enough, BUT if you are not familiar with that kind of work it is VERY easy to screw it up.  If you do, then the only cure is to buy a new aperture and try again....

I've done a couple....  ruined one....  and I'm pretty handy with that sort of stuff.  Not for the novice garage gunsmith.

If you have doubts about your ability, then by all means have an M1 mechanic fit the sight parts for you.  You'll be money ahead from ruining an aperture.

Just my 2 bits,

Best to all,

I run a .052 front sight on both of my M-1's.  Can get them from Brownell's.   I'd try the front sight before you spend the time and mony on the rear sight.

I think you'll be surprised on how much better the sight-picture is with a .052 front sight.

Thanks for the replies.

I am definately a garage gunsmith..I want to get the NM sights, but I don't want to send my rifle away.

Are there any websites that have a pictorial on exactely what needs to be done ?

The rifle does not have to be sent away....  only the rear sight parts.

TC,

Any decent M1 mechanic can do you right....

Fulton Armory
Tony Giaccobi, aka Garand Guy
Tony Pucci, aka Orion 7
Ronnie Morris, aka Match Service Works
Warbirds Custom Guns
Dean Dilabaugh, aka Deans Gun Restorations

I would NOT let the local Joe Gunsmith, who makes his living installing scope mounts on Mausers and Mosin Nagants do it.   Only somebody who works on the M1 or M14 (same sights) for a living....

Your biggest challenge is going to be finding a sight.  Good luck with that.  They've been really scarce for a good 4-5 years now.
