Title pretty well says it all.  I'm new to the M1A world and could use some input.  Specs as follows:  SA M1A 95 vintage , GI Gas cly unitized AMU style (screw and glue) by Huey Gunner: Sadlack op rod guide and Gas cly piston:  GI barrel H&R 62 vintage:  GI Fiberglass stock(black crinkle version supplied by SA) with selector cut out filled:  TRW Bolt 1.632 headspace: TRW trigger group National match mod by Ted Brown:  GI  flash suppesor NM mod by Huey Gunner:  Sadlack steel scope mount and 4-14 SA Scope:  Am trying to work up some hand loads, but this thing will even string Federal GNM ammo.  AL  grouping done off the bench using front rest and rear bag. I suspect insuficent stock downward tension.  I would appreciate any and all inputs.  Thanks in advance for your time and consideration.

Obviously breathing can play a part in it....even off a bench.  Also loose gas plug might.

Sounds like the rifle is doing it's part and your not....what distance are you shooting & what type of target are you shooting at?

just a thought, but are you riding the bag the same each shot? squeezing the rear bag?

may want to ask down in the competition forum, some 14 competitors lurk there,,

you may also want to try the same test with sling and prone,,

just a thought,,

This is usually shooter-related.

You'd be surprised what blackening the front sight post might do.

Low or high Natural Point of Aim (NPOA)

The front sight should cross the target in the middle of your breathing pattern. Anything else can result in you stringing your shots as you muscle the rifle around.

Clean out your gas piston, gas cylinder nut, and barrel port. Carbon build up in the gas piston/gas valve can cause the cycle rate to change and cause stringing as the barrel heats up.

yep
you don't have your NPOA, thus you breathe and it goes up and down.
guaranteed.

Be sure your head is in the same position fore and aft each shot. And front sight focus- the top of the front post must be sharp. And use a consistent 6 o'clock hold on the target.

Vertical stringing is caused by changing harmonics on the barrel. As it heats up, pressure on the barrel changes, either from bedding or in this case, probably a gas cylinder/piston. The pressure will increase as the barrel gets hotter, causing the stinging.
I don't believe it is shooter related.

Good grief.  When you shoot at the hole that you have made instead of the point of the original sight in.  This is more pronounced in pistol shooting.
