Picking up my first "real rifle"  tomorrow.  Brand new Springfield loaded with stainless barrel.  Never shot one before, so I'll be learning a lot as I go.

Right now I need to know if I should lube/grease it up new out of the box before shooting.  If so, is there a grease that I can use in lieu of some special product for that purpose.  My gun store may not have any specific product.  So I'm looking to go to Home Depot or something to find an acceptable grease to use for the time being.

Any ideas?

Thanks

When you get hold of your new M1A be certain to give it a thorough cleaning: barrel, gas system, and chamber with the ratcheting chamber brush.

As for lubrication: personally, I utilize Mobil 1 Synthetic Wheel Bearing Grease with good results.

Also, for further study the M14 Forums has a wealth of information available on the "care and feeding" of your new acquisition.

Welcome to the addiction!

Left to right.

Gas Cyl. wrench . Slides down over the cyl.
Gas Cyl. nut wrench , bolt take down tool . This should be part of every but stock cleaning kit . We all need this !!!
Chamber brush .
Castle nut pliers , for removing flash hider . Also need the allen wrench for the screw that traps the nut from moving .
Gas piston cleaning drill, Go slow and easy with this.
Muzzle guide .
Fancy T handle roller greaser , not so fancy greaser .
Little periscope for looking down the bore ( bring to the gun show for checking the bores !!)
A bolt rebuild kit , should have one in the range box and BOB .

A great book to get is "The US .30 caliber gass operated Service rifles" shop manual by Jerry Kuhnhausen .
OR " The M14 Complete Assembly Guide" by Walt Kuleck and Clint McKee .

Well first off the FM/TM , I have gotten these with a few new SA M1A's . We have FM 28-3 and TM9-1005-223-12
The FM covers the daily running and Troop maintance to keep it in the fight .
The TM , covers most of the FM but has a troubleshooting guide .

Then we have Walt and Clint's book , this cover's the ground up build of a Norinco/Poly , NM trigger work , how to make things fit and ALOT more . Has great pics of every step !!! A must have for sure .

Next is Jerry Kuhnhausen's book ( He has a lot of manual's 1911 etc , I need more of these .) 30 Cal Service Manual #1@2 . Ya get a 2fer here as the M1 Garand is covered also . Lots of tech drawings with Measurements !! Step by step for bedding and problem solveing , tune up of sights , the list goes on and on . A+ Get it !!!

The Last Steel Warrior , WOW . By Frank Iannamico
This covers the M14 from introduction to replacement ( yea right , thats going to happen ) LOTS of picture's of the M14 . Covers ammo , NM rifles , Poly's and Norinco's ,Training ,the 7.62mm cartridge ,parts and accessories , mags ( Bill Ricca supplied some pics ) . Frank also has a few more books out on other weapons , yup I need more !!! A++

Next are a couple of nice little books to have . By James R. Owens USMC (ret) . Ya got the weapon now lets make it TALK !!
Jims books cove getting the proper sight alignment and trigger control. His system or thoughts as they may be really helped me out , so I say it works . And you won't break the bank getting them .
He has also printed Leather Sling and Shooting Positions , this is a great High Power primer . I dont like the way he sets up the sling , but then thats just me . I dont shoot with a glove so the buckle bites my hand . He write's like an Marine , straight foward and to the point , with a little smartass just for kicks !!
