Yesterday I picked up a SA Service grade, 5,400,000+ range, M1 with about 90% finish on everything but the stacking swivel and a worn butt plate. The rifling is sharp & the muzzle takes the first 1/2 of a M2 bullet.  The previous owner had only put 3 bxs of CK M2 thru it since he got it from CMP 2 yrs ago. The wood is nice with not many dings in it with a matching finish on the stock & handguards. The major components are all SA with a 54 SA barrel.

Everything looks good al way around.

In the deal I also got 900 rds of LC ball, plus 18 en blocs clips, sling & gun case. All for $600, private sale.

Nice score! If you figure that the ammo, sling, enblocs, and case are approximately worth around $250-$300, then you scored a service grade garand for around $300-$350. That is a damn good deal!

Na, he's an older friend of mine thats decided to simply his life & possessions. He's going to put the money into a high-end bamboo fly rod.

He knows the SG is in a good home & will be well taken care of.

I just got a digital camera but I still ned to figure out how it all works.

I'll use this SG in the local JC Garand matches now. I've been using my first Garand I got back in the mid 80's from DCM. I keep coming in first or second in the matches but have to recuse myself since it's been bedded and has a match aperature on it so I can't claim any prize money.

Other than that it's stock & shoots real good. Back then they must have had some real nice M1's since it came to me looking almost new for $300 I think.

I also have a rack grade I got last year from CMP but it needs a rebuild. When I get that done I may put an Amega Ranges scout mount on it.

Have you had a chance to measure the TE and ME to see if it really is a Service Grade?

"Have you had a chance to measure the TE and ME to see if it really is a Service Grade?"

I don't have the gages, but the invoice from CMP says it's a Service Grade. CMP specifies the TE and ME thresholds and this one looks good to me.

Sounds like you are good to go.
