I am new to the Garands and M1 varients. I am considering getting a Garand from CMP and have several questions. What are the thoughts on the "field" grade rifles? Also does anyone have any idea on what the pricing of the "service" grade rifles would be. Since they are not accepting orders should I not even consider waiting. I see some people on the site have rifles from Greece-anything special to know about that option. Sorry for the generic lame questions-I have tried to read many of the post but these were questions I still had. Thanks. By the way I would only be using the rifle for recreational shooting, mostly at paper targets and at that probably only a couple of times a year. |

I've had 2 greek service grades and 3 usgi field grades. The bores on the field grades are more worn, one of them nearly swallows a bullet to the brass. They came with decent stocks that just needed cleaning up. I used denatured alcohol to strip the dirt and grime off of the wood. Retreat with BLO, Tung, or Tru Oil (I kinda like the truoil). With the greeks you have the potential to get something exactly like the usgi or 1. more beat up wood, 2. dark black metal finish the greeks used 3. greek replacement wood. I've seen some really cheesy greek stocks and have recieved 2 sets of greek handguards. They can be done over to look good. Not so sure on the buttstock portion though. I've read about some crappy greek inletting jobs. Bottom line is you'll get a nicer stock by buying a CMP replacement stock or a DGR stock. last I knew $425 for field grade and $550 for service grade no matter if greek or us. just get one! SoS |
Do it!!! I'm happy with my USGI Springer Field Grade. She's a shooter. |

So, if they were the same price and you could pick either the US rifle or the Greek returned rifle, which would you choose? I'm about to buy my first Garand and don't know if I should wait the 60+ days for a new bunch of US rifles or get one of the Greek ones now. What do you think? By the way, funds do not exist to "get both". |
| I had ordered a greek rack grade and later a US SA rack grade. There was no comparison. The greek was in a lot worse condition, espically the wood. The US SA was in much better condition overall, and it shoots a lot better. I have another US SA rack grade on order and I hope it is compareable. This was my experience and my experience only. Good luck. |

I got a Greek Field Grade and mine looks pretty good; still has the grey USGI parkerizing, walnut furniture (though handguards don't match the buttstock), the rifle gauges a 3.5 on the throat and 4 on the muzzle and shoots great at 100 meters. Is really a "luck of the draw" kind of deal; some greek rifles are better than others. |
